Jill wants us to re-think our views on Henry VIII… Not that many college-age kids give a flying cod piece but this year marks the 500th anniversary of the coronation of English king Henry VIII. I know. Exciting stuff. You can barely withstand your exhilaration, I can tell. I happen to be a long-time fan of Henry Tudor and his various achievements. But despite his bad reputation, some historians want King Harry to be bestowed with the title of “Henry The Great” (and not just because of his size). But what’s so “great” about this guy anyway? (Actually, he’s only been dead for about 460 years, but I digress.) Henry had his faults, especially when he was older. He divorced his first wife, a Spanish princess, to marry someone he was in love with, something that no other English king had ever done.

The setting is Tudor England in the grounds of the Tower of London, kneeling on the ground is a young woman aged somewhere between twenty-nine and thirty-five. The estate was once the home of the Boleyn family, and now encompasses nearly 5000 acres, with an impressive Jacobean house, a garden you'll want to try to recreate at home, and parkland perfect for walking. It's a full day out, whether you're on holiday in Norfolk, or you're lucky enough to live here. The landscape, with its narrow hedges and tree lined lanes, woodlands and red brick buildings is little changed over the centuries. Hire a bike, or grab a map of way-marked walks and head out into the park.

He died of pleurisy in 1511 (4.7 years before Princess Mary was born). He was never the ambassador to Italy. Note: Henry did have an uncle; Arthur Plantagenet, Viscount Lisle.
