The Democratic and Republican parties are the two major political parties in the United States. Here are some of the basic differences between the two, although you should always remember that people who describe themselves as either Republican or Democrat don't necessarily have all the same beliefs. They may subscribe to only some of their party’s core beliefs, and can even agree with many of the things that characterize the opposing party! For the last 100 years, the Democrats have tended to be the more left-leaning or liberal party in U.S. government. That means that Democrats tend to support the ideas of equal rights and opportunities for the working and lower classes, as well as the right to civil liberties that protect individuals from the government's interference.
The Republican Party, often called the GOP, is considered the more right-leaning or conservative party in U.S. government. "Ninety-eight percent of the adults in this country are decent, hard-working, honest Americans.
It's the other lousy two percent that get all the publicity. But then, we elected them. " —Lily Tomlin The United States is a federal republic consisting principally of 50 states and the District of Columbia, which is made up entirely of one city, Washington, DC. It's often called simply "DC" in common usage and is the seat of the federal government. Convinced everyone else this was a bad idea. Caution: Reality outside 495 may differ from reality inside 495.
There is a feeling among some Americans that there may be a reality distortion field of some sort that follows the outer edge of the Capital Beltway (a highway that circles DC). UsefulNotes/Political Ideologies.
These are the basic political ideologies that are prevalent in contemporary times.
Of course, these are largely simplified, and most people don’t adhere purely to one ideology, but adopt concepts from multiple ideologies. Still, most political works can be broadly defined as falling into one of the following categories. Please note, the following categories are ideological. Several groups running in Real Life elections often use these terms, but to refer to their political bloc rather than as an indicator of their actual ideological leanings. For instance, the contemporary United States’ meaning of ‘liberal’ refers to ‘social liberalism’ here, for the most part, while ‘conservativism’ combines some tenants of classical liberalism (where it concerns free-market capitalism, that is) and Oakeshottian/Burkean conservatism (morals and fear of change).

Gould, "The Republicans: A History of the Grand Old Party" English | ISBN: 0199936625 | 2014 | 416 pages | PDF | 5 MB The Republicans is a revised and updated edition of Lewis L. Gould'-s 2003 history of the Republican party. The book retains the features that made the first edition a success—a fast-paced account of Republican fortunes, a deep knowledge of the evolution of national political history, and an acute feel for the interplay of personalities and ideology.
All the main players in the Republican story are captured in penetrating sketches and deft analysis. Gould brings to life such forgotten Republican leaders as James G. The Paradoxes and Crisis of Contemporary Conservatism.
