Overpopulation -- The Population Explosion, by Paul and Anne Ehrlich. Why is the global economy constrained by the energy cost of energy? Overpopulation THE POPULATION EXPLOSIONby Paul and Anne Ehrlich Having considered some of the ways that humanity is destroying its inheritance, we can look more closely at the concept of "overpopulation. " All too often, overpopulation is thought of simply as crowding: too many people in a given area, too high a population density.

For instance, the deputy editor in chief of Forbes magazine pointed out recently, in connection with a plea for more population growth in the United States: "If all the people from China and India lived in the continental U.S. (excluding Alaska), this country would still have a smaller population density than England, Holland, or Belgium. " *31 The appropriate response is "So what? " When people think of crowded countries, they usually contemplate places like the Netherlands (1,031 per square mile), Taiwan (1,604), or Hong Kong (14,218). Professor John P. In our search for the cause of widespread poverty, the first question we must tackle is whether it is the result of our own inexorable fertility. That was the theory of Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834), the English Cleric, author of the Essay on the Principle of Population and originator of the perception of economics as "the dismal science.

" Malthus reasoned that human population tends to grow at a geometrical rate, while our ability to prooduce subsistence increases at a merely arithmetical rate — and so we find ourselves in an ever-deepening spiral of suffering caused by overpopulation. In Malthus's view this process could only be slowed by the "preventive check" of decreased fertility, or the "positive check" of increased mortality.

The Malthusian theory was once thought to be quite sufficiently denounced, relegated to the status of a curious footnote in the history of economic thought. Seven billion people is a lot of people, no doubt about it. Is it too many? Overpopulation? Jacqueline R. Kasun (economist and author) It's a day like any other. Your child comes home from school with an assignment. Only today, the assignment is to detail the problems that "overpopulation" is causing the world's ecosystem. And part of this assignment is to educate you about the world's population "problem. " What do you do? Government spokesmen, such as Ambassador Timothy Wirth, insist that this effort must also apply to the population of the United States.

There are many government policies that make it difficult for families to bring children into the world, and for those children's fathers to support them and their mothers to stay home and raise them. The United States government and the United Nations have promoted sex education in the schools, teaching children that there are too many far too many people in the world.

Myth 1: The world is overcrowded and population growth is adding overwhelming numbers of humans to a small planet. Dr. Top. Overpopulation.net - We Have Passed Our Sustainability by Mark R. Elsis.
