Abstract The chapter demonstrates that effects of tourist-host contact are mediated by the tourists' affluence, motivation, transience and sociological status.
The first section examines the effect of tourists on the visited people concluding that tourists appear to have maximum social and psychological impact on their hosts when the host communities are small, unsophisticated and isolated. When the receiving society is technologically more advanced and the affluence gap between tourists and hosts narrower, the contact experience has less impact. In this instance, tourists may develop friendships with the hosts, and the visitors can sustain local social institutions as well as prompting pride in the visited community.
