8 Ways to Reuse Your Costume. Now that Halloween is over and you’re ready to move onto the next holiday, consider yourself prepared to answer the question: What will you do with your costume, decor and more anyway? Well, finding out what to do with your pumpkin after Halloween is the easy part. And reusing your decorations year to year is a no-brainer. In fact, Americans buy nearly $1.58 billion worth of Halloween decorations each year. If each festive household could save just $5 per year by reusing some of their decorations from the previous year, the annual savings would total $420 million – enough to heat every U.S. home for seven hours during the first week of November. But what about your spooky duds? Let’s Get PracticalLet’s Get CreativeLet’s Get SeriousLet’s Think Twice 1. In reality, it might be a bit much to say that every single year you and the members of your family need a brand-new costume. So, save your costumes to wear another year (who’s going to remember anyway?)

By Ashley Tate and Sharon Tanenbaum (Real Simple) -- Composting upgrades garden soil, keeps plants healthy, and can even lessen planet-unfriendly greenhouse gases.

Here's how to do it. Composting is a smelly process. If you notice a stench, make sure you have enough browns in the pile. It's not just for people in the sticks anymore: Composting is great for all gardeners because it improves soil, which in turn prevents plant diseases. And it can even reduce harmful greenhouse gases.

"Organics that break down in a landfill produce methane gas, which is about 120 times more harmful than carbon dioxide," says Cary Oshins, assistant director for programs at the United States Composting Council, in Ronkonkoma, New York. So why not help the planet and your yard by piling it on. But once we put them on the school bus, we relinquish a lot of control over their green choices. Letting them ride the bus is a pretty sustainable act, but once they get to school, there's no guarantee the produce offered in the cafeteria will be pesticide free or that the cleaning products used in the gym will be nontoxic.

So how do we encourage our kids' schools to become more environmentally conscious? Here are a few tips, several of which I plan to try at my daughter's preschool: Find out if there are any green initiatives in place. You may be pleasantly surprised to learn that your child's school already has a recycling program or encourages water conservation. The green movement is catching on in a big way, and your child's school may already be well on its way to becoming more sustainable. Have you ever tried to encourage your child's school to go green?

(CNN) -- Clouds of black smoke from burning plastic hang over the sites of Nigeria's vast dumps, as tiny figures pick their way through slicks of oily water, past cracked PC monitors and television screens. Toxins from dumped electronics in developing countries has been seen as a growing problem.

But it isn't just a cut from broken glass these mainly young scavengers are risking. Much of the discarded electronic kit contains tiny -- but valuable -- quantities of aluminum, copper, cadmium and other minerals, all of which can be sold on, if they can be recovered. However they also contain highly toxic materials, which have been linked to reproductive problems and cancers. "People living and working on and around the dump sites, many of whom are children, are exposed to a cocktail of dangerous chemicals that can cause severe damage to health, including cancer, damage to the nervous system and to brain development in children," Kim Schoppink, Toxics Campaigner at Greenpeace, told CNN.

“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” That should be the motto of Freecycle™ We all do our best to Refuse, Reuse, and Recycle, but I bet we could do a lot more if we just knew how. Take a look at the discards that you send to the curb on “trash day”. Do you think anyone could use any of it? Or look at the mound of “trash” that your not-very-green neighbor puts out on the curb practically every pick-up day. There goes a nice bicycle, you exclaim, and a vacuum cleaner in better shape than yours, and look at all the cardboard boxes!!!

Freecycle helps us do our part to reduce waste and the burden on landfills, by simply using list-serve technology to find someone who wants our discards. You offer the item on a post; someone (often several people) request it. In the 1960s and early '70s, civil rights and the Vietnam War were the defining issues on college campuses. In the 1980s, it was apartheid. Today, that issue is climate change — or at least it will be, if Eban Goodstein has anything to do about it. An economics professor at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., Goodstein became convinced of the threat from climate change in the early 1990s. He started writing and speaking about it and eventually created the Green House Network in 1999 to train other global warming advocates — doing Al Gore's work before Gore was. But a couple of years ago, Goodstein came to realize that his response wasn't meeting the sheer scale of the climate change risk.

"Americans don't really understand," he says. "They think global warming is scary, but they don't realize how short a window of time we have. " It has to be. UrbanWatch.
