The transition from a one dimensional teacher, defined as a teacher who focuses on a single dimension such as content standards, to a 3-Dimensional teacher, one who weaves all three dimensions into lessons as appropriate, is a complex cognitive, pedagogical and paradigm challenge. Simply stated, this is not a quick, painless process. The transition to a 3-Dimensional teacher should be viewed as a life-long journey over a continuum of change. For this reason, MPRES recommends that teachers interested in the Toolkit take advantage of one of the MPRES professional development options.

NGSS Background: What is 3D Teaching? The Next Generation Science Standards were developed so that students could learn science in the way that scientists do science. For more on what the conceptual change process and 3D teaching mean for teachers, take a look at From 1D to 3D. If students are to learn these three dimensions, then all three must be explicitly taught. Conceptual Change and the Toolkit. Understanding NGSS — Stem Consortium.

This MOOC was held in April & May of 2013. However, the modules can be used in a self-paced manner to deepen your understanding of NGSS. A MOOC is an open online "course-like" professional development experience. The NGSS MOOC is free and does not carry UW Oshkosh credit. Several CORElaborate posts have addressed aspects of the dimensional nature of the Next Generation Science Standards: “OK, I GET IT,” you say. “The NGSS are unique in having three dimensions…But, now what? I’m not sure if those dimensions are supposed to work together or separately.

Maybe I don’t really need to do anything different if they’re already happening in my curriculum.” The 2-fer: 3D Understanding + Identifying Adjustments This year groups of science teachers in my district have been aligning existing science assessments, and they are getting two benefits (at least) for this one activity. (1) They are getting a big “Aha!” These breakthroughs have encouraged me to advocate for aligning assessments before analyzing lesson plans and units. Teacher reflections after aligning assessments reveal many ways that people are getting a deeper understanding of the three-dimensional NGSS. “I’m so much more comfortable navigating the NGSS now.” Process & Tools Links Existing assessments to align:

Transitioning to the Next Generation Science Standards’ way of constructivist teaching may seem a daunting task initially, but it is highly worthwhile! In this blog, we’ll share with you some easy ways to get started. NGSS shifts the focus from science classrooms as environments where students learn about science ideas to places where students explore, examine, and use science ideas to explain how and why phenomena occur (Reiser, 2013).

If you pique student curiosity they will be driven to want to learn more (Krajcik & Mamlok-Naaman, 2006). It follows that one of the most important components in making this transition to NGSS is planning your units around a big question tied to a puzzling phenomenon. Though the transition to NGSS and phenomenon-driven instruction may be challenging, there are small initial changes you can make that will provide large positive outcomes with regard to student motivation and depth of thinking. The Nature of Science (NOS) There is a growing recognition among teachers that we need to teach the "Nature of Science" (NOS). Ideally, this should begin in the primary grades and extend all the way through university. Teaching about the nature of science should not be restricted to students who major in science.

Every student should learn about the nature of science. This is not controversial. I'm not aware of anything in the recent pedagogical literature that argues against teaching the nature of science. One of the most important issues is the "Demarcation Problem. " I've written extensively about this controversy. John Wilkins discusses the "Demarcation Problem"Territorial demarcation and the meaning of scienceScience Doesn't Have All the Answers but Does It Have All the Questions? That's not what I want to talk about today.

The pedagogical literature generally ignores the demarcation problem and focuses on how to teach the nature of science (NOS) to students in traditional science classes. Description of science. Awarded Science Magazine's Science Prize for Online Resources in Education (SPORE), September 30, 2011 AAAS Press Release What is the Earth Exploration Toolbook?

Developed by teams of scientists and educators, the Earth Exploration Toolbook (EET) is a collection of online Earth system science activities. Each activity, or chapter, introduces one or more scientific data sets and analysis tools that enables users to explore some aspect of the Earth system. Within the context of a case study, each chapter guides users through a step-by-step process in which they access data and use analysis tools to explore real issues and questions in Earth system science. In the course of completing a chapter, users produce and analyze maps, graphs, images, or other data products. The ultimate goal of each activity is to build users' skills and confidence so they can use data to conduct their own investigations of the Earth system. Who is it for? How can I learn more? Bootstrap leverages students' excitement around videogames to teach algebraic concepts through programming. "This program Bootstrap is the best thing that happened to my son Omari, in one week dealing with math and computer programing for video games, then a whole year of math in school. His excitement to continue programing and his newfound love for college level math is going to propel him in the upcoming year. Great job, Bootstrap. See you next Year. " —Kalif A., NY What if a math class taught rigorous computer programming, using the concepts and content that are already in the book? Bootstrap is a curricular module for students ages 12-16, which teaches algebraic and geometric concepts through computer programming.

Our mission is to use students' excitement and confidence around gaming to directly apply algebra to create something cool. We work with schools, districts and tech-educational programs across the country, reaching hundreds of teachers and thousands of students each year. Science Pages | Project GUTS. Code.org has partnered with the award-winning Project GUTS (Growing Up Thinking Scientifically) to deliver a middle school science program consisting of four instructional modules and professional development for the introduction of computer science concepts into science classrooms within the context of modeling and simulation. The goal of the program is to situate computer science practices and concepts within the context of life, physical, and earth sciences, and to prepare students to pursue formal, year-long courses in computer science during high school.

Teaching resources Science is an inspiring process of discovery that helps satisfy the natural curiosity with which we are all born.

Unfortunately, traditional instruction that misrepresents science as a body of facts to be memorized and the process of science as a rigid 5-step procedure can deaden students' spirit of inquiry. Students should come away from our classrooms with an appreciation of the natural world — fascinated by its intricacies and excited to learn more. They should view and value science as a multi-faceted, flexible process for better understanding that world. Such views encourage life-long learning and foster critical thinking about everyday problems students face in their lives. You can cultivate these ways of thinking in your students through science instruction that accurately and enthusiastically communicates the true nature of science and that encourages students to question how we know what we know. The Field Book Project: Home. What is a field book? Field books or field notes are primary source documents that describe the events leading up to and including the collection of specimens or observations during field research.

Field notes can take many forms depending on the information needs of the collector. Importance and challenges of field books Field notes are significant sources of information related to scientific discovery. They provide rich data for researchers to understand how biodiversity has changed over time and space. Field books as an object type are located and described in a wide variety of ways.
