How I Plan to Eat an Elephant Named NGSS

I embrace it. I encourage it. I survive it. But it does not come easily. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) were in review as I trained to become a teacher and released as I was hired for my first Science teaching position. As I learn more about the NGSS, the more I realize I don’t know. The practices used by scientists and the interdependence of concepts were only illuminated through my research at the college level. Large lecture inquiry: How to engage students in the practices of science

Fred Goldberg I had the pleasure of meeting Fred Goldberg at this meeting, an influential teacher and education researcher. Even without knowing that he’s an important guy, you can sense his charm and intelligence like a warm glow. He’s very thoughtful and kind, and even gave me some useful feedback on my clicker workshops, suggesting that I ask participants to write questions focused on a particular pedagogical goal (such as “motivating to learn”) rather than around a content learning goal (e.g., “be able to apply Gauss’ law in conditions of high symmetry.”). I just tried that technique today, and it did seem easier for people to try writing around pedagogical goals. But what I want to write about here is a talk he gave during PhysTEC, prior to AAPT, about facilitating large-lecture inquiry.

So, what will happen if you cut the nail in half? Images (c) Fred Goldberg This took about 3 hours, more guided. Lesson: Nat. of Sci. mini-lesson: Theory, Theory. In any of the discussions expected with the class, select a few key items (important concepts) that lend themselves to interpretation, and introduce class to the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) routine dealing with those items. This is how "Active Learning" is done. CAUTION: Do NOT reveal the authors or dates of the models until AFTER all classes have done the lesson! To do so may bias their conclusions. Asteroids and dinosaurs: Unexpected twists and an unfinished story. Describing the nature of science. What is Science? Max Born (1882-1970), Nobel Prize-winning physicist, quoted in Gerald Holton's Thematic Origins of Scientific Thought The stumbling way in which even the ablest of the scientists in every generation have had to fight throught thickets of erroneous observations, misleading generalizations, inadequate formulations, and unconscious prejudice is rarely appreciated by those who obtain their scientific knowledge from textbooks James Bryant Conant (1893-1978), Science and Common Sense I think that we shall have to get accustomed to the idea that we must not look upon science as a "body of knowledge", but rather as a system of hypotheses, or as a system of guesses or anticiptations that in principle cannot be justified, but with which we work as long as they stand up to tests, and of which we are never justified in saying that we know they are "true" . . .

What is Science?

Karl R. Evolution Library: Topic Page. What is science? The word "science" probably brings to mind many different pictures: a fat textbook, white lab coats and microscopes, an astronomer peering through a telescope, a naturalist in the rainforest, Einstein's equations scribbled on a chalkboard, the launch of the space shuttle, bubbling beakers ….

What is science?

All of those images reflect some aspect of science, but none of them provides a full picture because science has so many facets: Science is both a body of knowledge and a process. In school, science may sometimes seem like a collection of isolated and static facts listed in a textbook, but that's only a small part of the story. Just as importantly, science is also a process of discovery that allows us to link isolated facts into coherent and comprehensive understandings of the natural world. Science is exciting. Classroom Sample Assessment Tasks. The Classroom Sample Tasks blend content, practices, and concepts from both the NGSS and the Common Core State Standards.
