Assessing Mathematical Understanding

Assessing Mathematical Understanding is a set of mathematics assessments for kindergarten and first-grade students that provides both cumulative data about students’ progress over time and in-depth diagnostic information. Aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, it is intended as a tool to help teachers track student progress, identify particular difficulties, and generally inform instructional planning. Goals of Assessing Mathematical Understanding To enhance teachers’ ability to meet individual student needsTo facilitate teacher collaboration around student learningTo promote student learning in mathematics. An Orientation Module A "Closer Look at the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics" is an introductory module that will assist teachers, administrators, and leaders of kindergarten through high school in building an understanding of the Common Core State Standards for mathematics.

The materials include facilitator notes, slideshows, and handouts. The activities in each session are designed to support teams in working together to explore various aspects of the standards. The Common Core State Standards in mathematics were built on progressions: narrative documents describing the progression of a topic across a number of grade levels, informed both by research on children's cognitive development and by the logical structure of mathematics.

These documents were spliced together and then sliced into grade level standards. From that point on the work focused on refining and revising the grade level standards. The early drafts of the progressions documents no longer correspond to the current state of the standards. It is important to produce up-to-date versions of the progressions documents. They can explain why standards are sequenced the way they are, point out cognitive difficulties and pedagogical solutions, and give more detail on particularly knotty areas of the mathematics.

This project is organizing the writing of final versions of the progressions documents for the K–12 Common Core State Standards.
