Teaching Design Thinking: Units and Advice from Educators

Students need to be able to take in ideas, process them, and then distill them into new ideas. However, how students learn to think can be vastly different, and unique to the person teaching them. This idea spurred us to look for “how” teachers get students to think, broaden their scope of understanding, and problem solve. We were amazed at the diverse inclusion of the Design Thinking Process into units of instruction.

Some of us might remember that groundbreaking Nightline episode (I am dating myself with this reference, aren’t I?) Below, we asked a few teachers to share how they have brought Design Thinking into their courses. Design Thinking Projects and Challenges. Helvetica - Gary Hustwit. Design Thinking for Educators. Educators across the world have been using design thinking to create such a world. Design Thinking for Educators. Design Thinking for Educators. Design thinking is a mindset. It is the confidence that everyone can be part of creating a more desirable future, and a process to take action when faced with a difficult challenge. That kind of optimism is well needed in education.

Classrooms and schools across the world are facing design challenges every single day, from teacher feedback systems to daily schedules. Wherever they fall on the spectrum of scale – the challenges educators are confronted with are real, complex, and varied. And as such, they require new perspectives, new tools, and new approaches. Design thinking is a mindset. Classrooms and schools across the world are facing design challenges every single day, from teacher feedback systems to daily schedules. Intro. Design innovation for social good. Is Design Thinking Missing From ADDIE? SumoMe Even though a crucial part of our jobs involve design, the prevailing instructional design models are based on systems thinking.

Is Design Thinking Missing From ADDIE?

Systems thinking promotes an analytical or engineering type of mindset. But we also need an approach to help us synthesize, innovate and create. In many design fields today, people who are required to create on demand use a design thinking model for this purpose. Innovative E-Learning Solutions. Learning Forward - Professional Learning for Student Results. ADDIE Model. The ADDIE model is the generic process traditionally used by instructional designers and training developers.

ADDIE Model

The five phases—Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation—represent a dynamic, flexible guideline for building effective training and performance support tools. While perhaps the most common design model, there are a number of weaknesses to the ADDIE model which have led to a number of spin-offs or variations. It is an Instructional Systems Design (ISD) model. Most of the current instructional design models are spin-offs or variations of the ADDIE model; other models include the Dick & Carey and Kemp ISD models.

One commonly accepted improvement to this model is the use of rapid prototyping. Instructional theories also play an important role in the design of instructional materials. In the ADDIE model, each step has an outcome that feeds into the subsequent step. Analysis > Design > Development > Implementation > Evaluation Analysis Phase.
