Manuscripts were included on the basis of three criteria: Manuscripts produced between 1400 and 1550.Manuscripts originating in the Netherlands / Low Countries (roughly present-day Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and the French region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais).

Thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Schoenberg Database of Manuscripts is currently being redeveloped into a user-driven, collaborative tool for researching the historic and current locations of the world's manuscripts (read more about the NEH project). Effective from October 15, 2015, the present website will no longer be updated as we move operations to a new platform and continue testing.
We will still add and refine data, but changes made during this time will not be publicly visible until the new site goes live in summer 2016. CodIcon online - Einführung CodIcon online entstand als elektronischer Katalog zu einem mit Cod.icon., d.h. „Codices iconographici“ bezeichneten Fonds von Handschriften der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek. Dieser Fonds birgt einen Sondertypus von repräsentativen vielfach großformatigen Handschriften, Einzelblattsammlungen und Hängetafeln, der sich mit dem klassischen Begriff der Illuminierten Handschrift nicht beschreiben lässt, wie er für die mit Bildseiten, historisierten Initialen und auch Textillustrationen geschmückten mittelalterlichen Text-Handschriften benutzt wird.
Die „ Codices iconographici“ sind Bilderhandschriften und Bildsammlungen ohne oder nur mit erklärendem Text, also Sachbilderbücher. Ihrem Charakter nach sind es repräsentative Kunstkammerstücke, wie sie eher im Bestand eines Graphik-Kabinetts zu vermuten wären als in der Bibliothek, in die sie aus historischen Gründen gelangten.
