The Museum of New Zealand recently released more than 30,000 images of art and artifacts to download and re-use for free. The images are a mix of public domain images and images labeled with a Creative Commons license. The museum makes it easy to determine how an image is licensed. To determine the licensing of an image simply click on the download button and the next page clearly shows the license for the image. Finding images in the Museum of New Zealand's gallery isn't the most intuitive process. Applications for Education My first thought about this collection was that it could be another place for students to look for images to use in presentations that they create. H/T to Open Culture. The Art History discipline is designed to develop visual arts literacy, as well as critical and interpretive thinking skills.

As an Art History Major, you will receive a solid grounding in the history of western art as well as the art of certain non-western cultures. The major consists of twelve courses: four mandatory “core program” courses and eight electives. The core program will introduce the principal terminology, methods, and questions that comprise the study of art history and will prepare you to discuss and understand the major issues of art history and the central debates of art historical criticism. Your first course, ARTH101: Art Appreciation and Techniques, will present you with an overview of the language, themes, and techniques most frequently used in art and its study as well as the tools you need to approach visual art from an art historical perspective.

In order to complete the major, you will need to take three 400-level electives. Public Domain Images | Aikermann's Repository of Arts - The Complete Collection - 1,499 Illustrations | Public Domain ImagesPublic Domain Images. Ok folks, I’m super excited to finally announce that we have extracted all of the public domain images and illustrations from the Aikermann’s Repository of Arts. We manually sorted 20,000 pages of the 20 year publication, published from 1809 to 1829 and extracted 1,499 illustrations.

This is probably one of my favorite collections that we have ever discovered. There are 3 ways that you can obtain the Aikermann’s Repository of Arts. *Note: If you are already a premium member, you can begin browsing and downloading the images right now. We have broken the collection into separate galleries containing 200 public domain images each. We did this to allow you to browse the images more easily. Since the individual images are so large, having too many images in a single gallery tends to make the images load extremely slow. Three Options for Downloading the Public Domain Images 1) You can download the entire collection of 20,000 pages in PDF format.

At TEDGlobal 2013, Shereen El Feki shared how her research in the Middle East revealed more conservative attitudes about sex than existed in the 10th century. Photo: James Duncan Davidson “The political and the sexual are intimate bedfellows,” says Shereen El Feki in yesterday’s talk. “That is true for all of us, no matter where we live and love.” Shereen El Feki: A little-told tale of sex and sensualityFor five years, El Feki talked to people across Middle East about their bedroom behavior, and what she found over and over was a seemingly deep-rooted conservatism — in which any sex outside of heterosexual marriage is unacceptable.

But as she shows, Arabic literature is rich with proof that the regional culture was once far more sexually open; erotic writing was produced even by religious scholars. So what happened? El Feki points to the rise of religious conservatism starting in the 1970s — within the lifetimes of many people she interviewed. Some Cairo mosques, and their founders : Devonshire, R.
