But perhaps tomorrow’s founders will experiment with a very different kind of code — the genetic code that underlies how everything from one-celled organisms to humans develop and behave. A pair of companies in San Francisco’s SOMA neighborhood and Tel Aviv are positioning themselves as the “Wintel” of the bio-hacking era. One company, called Genome Compiler, builds software for designing synthetic life forms, while the other, Cambrian Genomics, is experimenting with ways to cheaply laser print DNA.

Published on Feb 11, 2013 Problem: Synthetic biology has the potential to create new organisms that could do an infinite number of things. But the cost of synthesizing DNA is currently prohibitively expensive. Solution: Austen has developed a new technique to synthesize DNA 10,000 times cheaper than existing technology. Technology: One of the big challenges with DNA synthesis is error correction during fabrication, fabricating the correct sequence of A, T, G and Cs.

And pinterest for boys... err... I mean - men

If you think the virtual pinboard site is a little too feminine, you’re not alone. In a recent Pew study of social media users, 25 percent of women said they used Pinterest, compared to a meager 5 percent of men. Since Pinterest’s creation, a number of similar websites have popped up that offer pins in what they consider manlier topics. While the men who use these sites abandoned Pinterest because of what they saw as a lack of subjects they could relate to, a number of Pinterest’s power users are actually men.

If you look hard enough, you can find everything from power tools to men’s fashion on Pinterest. I enrolled - join me? New blog post: The Connected Learners- A Book by Students for Teachers @annmic

We have heard plenty from educational “gurus” and theorists what students should/shouldn’t be learning and how we should/shouldn’t be teaching. I have written and talked plenty about the need for globally connected educators . I have even written a chapter in Heidi Hayes Jacobs ‘ upcoming book about Global Literacies. It is time to hear from students! Ann Michaelsen, a High School English teacher from Oslo, Norway did precisely that. Ann shares in the book’s introduction As a classroom teacher, you cannot create your own educational system. however, you can change what is going on in your classroom. The secret seems to lie in giving students a voice, letting them take ownership and asking them to learn skills that help them perform a “just in time” not a “just in case” authentic task. The chapter on motivation is especially interesting. Popcorn Maker allows you to overlay your videos with content. TED Talk / Try it now.

It doesn’t appear next to your online social activity just to make things visually appealing – it might do that – but it’s not the point. Give people visual signposts that make it easier to identify your activity People who use Twitter, Plurk and other networks suddenly become aware of how much they rely (or relied) on people’s profile pictures/avatars when a lot of people suddenly change their image to support a cause… or just for fun. While a user names help – scanning thumbnail images is a quicker way for most of us to find the posts from people that we find interesting, amusing … or … otherwise.
