Ethics. Podcast. Music of the season – Yule « Executive Pagan. [Note: this is a lightly edited repost from my old LJ. I am hoping to make this an occasional series here, as warranted.] Good Winter Solstice music is hard to find. In general I do not include filked Christmas carols in the “good” category, although there are a couple of exceptions (and completely new pagan words set to an existing melody are a different matter altogether). Good *Christmas* music abounds, of course… and some of it is even reasonably pagan-friendly. Here, then, are the few tracks, either explicitly pagan or just pagan-friendly, that I have found so far to liven up my Solstice season. Gaia Consort – “Gathering” (from Gaia Circles) GC is one of the few really rockin’ pagan bands I know of outside the metal/hardcore genre; if this track doesn’t have you drumming on the steering wheel you’re probably dead.

Gypsy – “Bring Back the Light” (from Enchantress) Yeah, yeah, I know, this track is a hundred years old… but it’s still good. Elvis Costello with The Chieftains – “The St. A Hedgewitch’s Booklist. Call of the Horned Piper – Nigel Jackson Cunning Folk and Familiar Spirits – Emma Wilby Hedge-Rider: Witches of the Underworld – Eric de Vries Secrets of East Anglian Magic – Nigel Pennick Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy – Mircea Eliade The Nature Path – Starhawk Masks of Misrule: The Horned God & His Cult in Europe – Nigel Jackson Natural Magic – Doreen Valiente Shamans – Ronald Hutton Psychedelic Shamanism: The Cultivation, Preparation & Shamanic Use of Psychoactive Plants – Jim Dekorne The Way of the Hedge Witch: Rituals and Spells for Hearth and Home – Arin Murphy-Hiscock Popular Magic: Cunning-folk in English History – Owen Davies The Way of the Green Witch: Rituals, Spells, And Practices to Bring You Back to Nature – Arin Murphy-Hiscock Spiritwalking – Poppy Palin Leechcraft: Early English Charms, Plantlore and Healing – Stephen Pollington Encyclopedia of Natural Magick – John Michael Greer Craft Of The Wild Witch: Green Spirituality & Natural Enchantment – Poppy Palin.

Selected Articles from Lina, The Journal of Frigga's Web. Celtic Astrology. The subject of Celtic Astrology has been mainly untouched because, quite simply, there is little actual evidence as to how the Celts viewed astrology. There is undoubtedly much archeological evidence to prove that the Celts had knowledge of the heavenly bodies and their movements. This alone does not make astrology, only a possible form of astronomy. We have literary evidence from some of the the classical writers; Strabo, Julius Caesar, Pliny that the Draoi (Druids) had knowledge of "natural sciences" and the heavens. But we have no clear cut evidence of how the Celts defined their astrology. How they interpreted the signs and the motions in the heavens.

Greaghoir Mac An Ghobhainn In connection with a book and a study series I'm doing for a Druidic journal, I've been kicking around ways that the Druids could have done Astrology. Tentative Steps Toward Deriving a Uniquely Irish/Celtic Astrology: Deriving a uniquely Irish/Celtic Astrology is the work of many lifetimes. Other Signs: Celtic Tree Astrology. Celtic Astrology According to Druid and Ogham Properties Celtic tree astrology is based on the ancient idea that the time of our births is pivotal to the formation of our personality and behavior.

The spiritually savvy Celts, particularly the druids were expert observers. Over time, they recognized that a child born within a certain season would develop certain qualities. Further, the druids observed patterns in the color and shape of a person's life according to the motions of the moon (their calendar being based on a lunar year) and the season in which we are born.

The system of Celtic tree astrology was developed out of a natural connection with the druid's knowledge of earth cycles and their reverence for the sacred knowledge held by trees. As mentioned on my Celtic Meaning of Trees Page, the druids had a profound connection with trees and believed they were vessels of infinite wisdom. Below I have provided my interpretation of the Celtic tree astrology signs. The Sacred Fire - A Celebration of Ancient Celtic History and Lore. Na Gadelica - Gaelic Traditionalist Resource Site. Wiccan Wands for Magic Spells - A Wand is an Essential Item for the Witchs Altar. A witch’s wand is used to invoke the element of air, as an extension of the arm used to project energy and also to designate a sacred space for magical work. Choosing a Wiccan Wand A wand is as unique as the witch who uses it, there are no hard and fast rules concerning the materials or construction of a Wiccan wand. Traditionally, the wand is usually made of wood, or alternatively of copper or silver. Store Bought Wiccan Wand or Homemade? Wiccans can choose between making their own wand and buying one from a Wiccan store. Again there are no hard and fast rules here, except to trust to instinct. When considering a store bought wand, be sure hold it to discover how it feels; it will become clear if it is the right one!

It's believed that a crystal tip on a wand can focus energy more intensely, and some wands are wrapped in a spiral of a long strip of soft leather, while other wands may clasp a rounded crystal in the handle. Making a Simple Wiccan Wand from the Living Tree Sources: Cleansing the Energy of Purchased Items - Cleanse Energies from Store Bought or Used Metaphysical Tools. A great variety of Pagan and occult tools and supplies can be found online and in metaphysical bookstores. Many interesting and useful tools, such as athames or bolines, chalices, and candles can also be found in second hand stores. Whether the purchased supplies are new or used, a careful practitioner should cleanse all items they intend to use for spells or rituals. Even New Items Can Carry Unwanted or Contrary Energy While some items, such as crystals and talismans, are believed to absorb energy easier than other items, anything used or created for spiritual purposes can become energetically charged.

A candle that someone packages or owns while they are going through a very dark period in life can pick up depressed or angry energy, which can hamper a spell for positivity. Most new items come fairly "clean" of other's energy, but it's impossible to know what used items have been exposed to. I extend enormous thanks to Michel Boucher for his essays on Celtic Mythology and Irish literature and for his substantial work which may be seen in the Solarguard Canadian Archaeology section.

Furthermore, he created this solarguard page and showed Michael McKenny how it works. All its imperfections are mine.
