You can see the Marmoleum click flooring that I used (courtesy of GreenBuildingSupply.com) and the turquoise Marmoleum sheet good countertops (which everyone mistakes for being original - which means I picked the right color!). At first I thought all the colors were a little much, but I like them now. It fits my style. I'm happy with my little fold-down desk area in the back, made out of salvaged 1950's cracked ice Formica. We used scrap Marmoleum from the countertops to make the bathroom floor, and some panels of cork flooring from the ReStore for the kick-plates in there. Oh, and I just updated the PHOTOS page too, with these pictures. Well, it's not finished, but it's quite homey, and I love it. Big Green Bus. Interest in simple living, tiny houses, and living a more minimalist life is rapidly growing, and while many of us may never get to experience dwelling full-time in a micro-house or other sustainable small home, we can probably all attempt to live more deliberately and learn to live a leaner life, even if it's just for a season.

And even if you can't imagine doing it yourself, because your life seems too full of stuff and things and schedules and commitments that preclude living in a more minimalist fashion, then at the very least, you can live vicariously through the experiences of others, such as those found in the "Summer of (family) love" roadtrip documentary. Nicolás Boullosa and Kirsten Dirksen, co-founders of the simple living site *faircompanies, decided to get a feel for "micro-living" by packing their family of five into a VW Westfalia camper, and taking a roadtrip through the Pacific Northwest, bringing only the minimum of stuff with them. Tiny Home VW Roadtrip Documentary. One of the most elusive goals in life is determining just what you need to live.

Tiny Home VW Roadtrip Documentary

As co-founders of a site on simple living (faircompanies.com), we’ve spent the past eight years examining the unencumbered lives of others, but this summer we had the opportunity to try out micro-living first-hand when we packed our family of 5 into a Westfalia campervan for a filming roadtrip through the Pacific Northwest. Limiting ourselves to one backpack per person, the five of us moved into our 50-square-foot mobile home (a 1981 VW Westfalia “Westy”, purchased used off craigslist). We hit the road determined to cook all our own meals (propane stove & refrigerator included) and to create our home every night in a different location (RV parks not included, infant potty included). With no advanced reservations and only interviews to guide us, we visited the homes of regulars in the tiny house world. With each stop we picked up some new piece of wisdom about life’s essentials. Homemade Teardrop Camper Trailer. Step #1: PrevNext First, I found an old popup trailer very cheap....The old popup camper was dismantled and some parts were recycled. I got some money from the old aluminum siding and stainless steel lifting mechanism. The frame was power-sanded, first with a rotary wire brush and then with 80-grit sandpaper.

Then it was painted with Rust-Oleum rust preventative, and finally covered with Rust-Oleum black paint. Step #2: Then I made a frame with 2x4 pine studs, with 1/8-inch Luan plywood at the bottom and 1/2-inch plywood on top. Step #3: After that, I glued and screwed on a 1/2-inch birch plywood floor, then painted it with polyurethane paint and covered it with some vinyl flooring. The floor is bolted to the frame with sixteen 1/2-inch hardened bolts with nylon lock nuts and safety washers.
