A Bold Chair Made from 100% Biodegradable Cardboard

Designers at SanSanserif Creatius have just premiered their Bold Chair, a funky new seating module constructed from 100% biodegradable corrugated cardboard. Each chair is completely screw-free and is formed via stacked 5mm thick sheets. But don’t be deceived by the lightweight material — compression tests found that this chair is able to withstand the resistance of up to 2,000 lbs. Functional, economic and eco-friendly – what a bold statement! Sanserif Creatius' Recycled Cardboard Chair Hides a Footrest and Table In Its Seat. This awesome recycled cardboard armchair from Sanserif Creatius is a curvy and comfortable piece that maximizes space by concealing a separate footrest and coffee table within its seat.

Dubbed ‘Prejudice’, the chair incorporates three elements in one using 100% recycled cardboard as its base material. The new chair joins the Valencian designers’ already sizeable collection of sustainable designs. Part of a limited edition collection, Prejudice was designed with the idea that it could be adapted to suit many different spaces. The team put social inclusion and environmental ideas at the forefront of their design, collaborating with the Association of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (AFCO) and the Special Employment Centre of “Apai Foundation” to promote socio-labor integration. Typographic "O" Footrest Is Made Entirely from Recycled Cardboard. The 3-in-1 recycled cardboard chair was a hard act to follow, but Sanserif Creatius has done it again with this curved typographic footrest.

Inspired by the letter “O”, the stool/footrest is crafted entirely from recycled corrugated cardboard. The latest in the Bold collection from the Spanish studio, the “O” piece is a playful complementary item that gives eco-design principles a cool, industrial finish. Made with low environmental impact in mind, and a commitment to social labor, the footrest follows the studio’s principles of sustainability and responsibility. Adding a bit of fun to the design, the studio often uses re-purposed materials to illustrate themes such as typography, comics, and folklore. And, building on the idea of reusing sustainable items, Sanserif has even experimented with using hair in their work!

But when you put this fuzzy little stool in the context of Arquitécnica Gallery’s upcoming show, “My cHair needs a haircut,” where the chair will be displayed from September 16th-October 12th, one can begin to appreciate the playful and almost satirical elements of the design. From materials to production and assembly, Ana Yago, the Valencia-based designer who started Sanserif Creatius, the studio behind the hair chair, has considered the environment every step of the way. Leo Kempf’s Recycled Cardboard Conversation Table. We’ve all heard of pieces of furniture that act as conversation pieces, but how about a table that not only starts conversations but actually looks like a giant speech bubble?

Leo Kempf’s Recycled Cardboard Conversation Table

Brilliant! Constructed entirely of scrap pieces of cardboard, Leo Kempf‘s conversation table is sturdy, witty, and an excellent option if you’re looking for a coffee table that will get your guests talking every time they come over. Inspired by Frank Gehry’s “Wiggle Chair,” the Conversation Table is made out of several sheets of corrugated cardboard stacked on top of one another and cut to form a speech bubble shape. To save on material, Kempf then uses plywood spacers between the layers of cardboard.

The resulting table is handsome, lightweight and offers space to store or display items. The conversation table will be on display at 360 See Gallery in Chicago along with a matching curved wall-shelf using the same materials. . + Leo Kempf Design + 360 See Gallery.
