Cardboard Child's Play Kitchen. Before/After Thrift Store Play Kitchen. No little ones at our house but I do have a 3-year-old nephew and two nieces under 4-years-old. Not to mention someday (not anytime soon…I’m in no rush), I’ll have grandchildren. So when I see fun do-it-yourself kids’ ideas, it does make me get all DIY-itchy to do something creative. It’s almost yard sale season here in western PA and I’ll be on the hunt for an old kids’ kitchen or furniture that looks like it’d function as a play kitchen.

The very clever Erin of Sutton Grace blog had taken a 2nd hand TV entertainment unit and turned it into a mini kitchen for her little girl. I LOVED this idea sooooo much and sat looking at the blog post for the longest time trying to work out if I could do it myself.... I decided in the end mine would never look that amazing. Yep, that is Milla's very own repurposed play kitchen!!

Build A Play Stove From Recycled Laminated Cardboard. This Instructable covers how to turn old cardboard boxes into strong, rigid cardboard panels that can be used to make a safe, simple play stove. The best part about the play stove is the oven; you can store a lot of play food in a play oven. Since the most salient feature of a new toy is generally its novelty, you can make a perfectly adequate play stove by flipping over a cardboard box and drawing some burners on it. This stove is insanely overbuilt; I was mostly looking for an excuse to try out making "plywood" out of cardboard.

So, on to the cardboard laminate. A useful fact from the world of mechanics of solids is that the flexural rigidity of a plate increases with the cube of the thickness. In layman's terms this means that if you double the thickness, you make it eight times stronger. You might have seen pics on my other blog, but here are recent ones with all three finished pieces. We are really happy with how these turned out. Ana White’s plans are so simple to use… I highly recommend giving them a try if you’re the least bit handy! Ana was kind enough to feature our kitchen on her blog along with others. That’s the cool thing about Ana’s plans… you can customize them with paint and details to suit your taste! Here’s some other takes on the same play kitchen plans: Robin’s kitchen…I love all the counterspace! Being Brook’s kitchen…the girly details make me swoon. Mary’s kitchen…subtle differences make this one stand out, like the double doors under the sink and the rounded oven window.

It’ll be fun to have my little one play with something I made with my own two hands. There’s so many ways to create DIY play kitchen…use an old TV cabinet or dresser, using shelving and piping, an old side table.
