Ice Cool Brooklyn by Martin Filler. The theme of Bill de Blasio’s successful campaign to become mayor of New York was “a tale of two cities,” his metaphor for the widening gulf between the rich and the poor, the privileged and the powerless.

In urban design, nothing could have made that split clearer than the contrasting fortunes of Tod Williams and Billie Tsien’s two heartfelt contributions to New York life—one their new ice rink in Prospect Park, instantly treasured by a broad cross-section of Brooklyn, the other their American Folk Art building on West 53rd Street, finally undefended by its plutocratic overseers at Manhattan’s Museum of Modern Art.

After Williams and Tsien’s triumphant completion of their Barnes Foundation Gallery of 2003-2012 in Philadelphia, their Brooklyn rink, unveiled in late December, might seem a lesser accomplishment. Almost one tenth of Prospect Park is given over to a fifty-five-acre manmade lake, which from the outset became an irresistible venue for ice skating.

A place where anyone can make a difference. The focus is on cultural, intellectual and political debate or, more precisely, on the production of the public sphere. The public sphere, die Öffentlichkeit, is not something given; it is made – over and over again.

Art may hold the key to solving the problems of the future. What contribution can artists make to the future of cities?

Art may hold the key to solving the problems of the future

According to Mori Art Museum director Fumio Nanjo, the potential is limitless. Ahead of the upcoming Innovative City Forum, at which he will participate in a range of discussions on art, urbanism and the future, Nanjo said that he believes the key to artists’ contribution lies in their focus on creativity. “At the core of any discussion of creativity or innovation is art,” he explained. “It is the one field of human endeavor in which there really are no restrictions. When one does art, there are no frameworks, no rules to which one must adhere.” At the mention of art, the Japanese public is likely to first think of Picasso’s oddly deformed portraits, or the giant polka-dot installations of their own Yayoi Kusama.

PRESS RELEASES - Press Release - EU 'Smart Borders': Commission wants easier access and enhanced security. PRESS RELEASES - Press Release - EU 'Smart Borders': Commission wants easier access and enhanced security

Today the European Commission adopted a Communication which sets out the main options for using new technologies to simplify life for foreigners frequently travelling to the EU and to better monitor third-country nationals crossing the borders. Enabling smooth and fast border crossing for travellers, while ensuring an adequate level of security, is a challenge for many Member States. Every year more than 700 million EU citizens and third country nationals cross the EU's external borders. "The Union must continue to modernise the management of its external borders and ensure that the Schengen area is better equipped to cope with future challenges", said Cecilia Malmström, Commissioner for Home Affairs. Catalonia’s Independence: A Reply to Joseph Weiler. Nico Krisch (Hertie School of Governance, Berlin & IBEI, Barcelona) Joseph Weiler’s polemic on Catalan independence has certainly stirred up debate (see the comments on the piece), which is always helpful.

Catalonia’s Independence: A Reply to Joseph Weiler

But as much as I admire much of Weiler’s academic work, I find this intervention heavily misguided in substance, in part because of a misunderstanding of the reasons behind the Catalan drive, in part because of a misreading of the nature of independence claims in general. I write this having spent a significant part of the last decade in Barcelona, with a growing appreciation for the concerns of Catalans and of sub-state nationalism in general, which has certainly toned down my earlier, perhaps rather naïve cosmopolitanism that had little time for nations and borders.

All this does not reach the threshold for remedial secession under international law. But is international law, state-centric and state-made as it is, a good guide for our normative approach here? Study: school design can significantly affect a child's grades.

A study of school design has discovered that school layouts can influence a child's development by as much as 25 percent -- positively or negatively -- over the course of an academic year. The 751 pupils using 34 classrooms across seven primary schools in Blackpool were studied over the 2011-12 academic year by the University of Salford's School of the Built Environment and architecture firm Nightingale Associates. Standardised data -- such as age, gender and academic performance -- were collected on each child at the start and end of the year, while each classroom was rated for quality on ten different environmental factors, such as orientation for natural light, shape, colour, temperature and acoustics.

The results, published in Building and the Environment, revealed that the architecture and design of classrooms has a significant role to play in influencing academic performance. Unsurprisingly, the design proposals have been met with disapproval from architects. Image: Shutterstock. L'Espanya federal i altres utopies. Media Nations : Sabina Mihelj. Media Nations: Communicating Belonging and Exclusion in the Modern World provides an original interdisciplinary introduction to the study of the media and nationalism in the modern world. Building on a range of international case studies and taking into account recent debates about globalization, cosmopolitanism and alternative modernities, Sabina Mihelj offers aninsightful analysis that:  argues for the continuing relevance of concepts such as nationalism and national identity in understanding the global patterns of mediated communication and identification  bridges the gap between text-based analysis of national imagination and the more sociological concerns with the impact of media institutions and the broader political and economic context  challenges the tacit ethnocentrism of existing debates, and opens up the study of nationalism and mass communication to the multiple trajectories of modernity around the globe Contents.
