Learning color through paints. 1 The Basic Color Attributes. Let's start at the beginning: what we mean when we talk about "color". The essential fact is that color is in the mind, not in the external world. Paints have definite physical attributes that produce our color experience, but color experience is remarkably dynamic and adaptive because our mind determines what a "color" is, not the physical attributes of the paint. If only a single color is visible, the color is a sensation produced by stimulation to the retina in the eye. If two or more colors are visible at the same time, color is a perception that is strongly affected by contrasts in color and brightness. And in everyday experience, color is a judgment that is strongly affected by our interpretation of light and objects in physical space.

Color experience is the outcome of context judgments that combine the quality of light and our understanding of the physical world to create the appearance of constant object colors. Fun with alcohol. In and Out of The Studio. Lunch During last week's book binding/journal painting workshop we sat in the sun in big comfortable Adirondack chairs, painted our lunches, and talked about food, gardening, cooking . . .

The two days of the workshop, Thursday and Friday, were absolutely perfect - warm and sunny. And the sketchbook journals that were made were absolutely beautiful - colorful and creative. The idea of having the journal painting day as part of the bookbinding workshop is to get the book binders to "bond" with their books. The books take a whole day to make and are very precious - not something you'd mark up, throw in your paint bag, possibly goof up a page here and there - unless of course, you were paying someone to coax you into making those first marks in your book, and you find out how much you and your book like being together.

Since I've been carrying my sketchbook with me all the time, I find that I look at life around me with a little more appreciation. Moyo Magazine. Watercolors. See famous watercolor artists demonstrate on video how to paint with watercolors. Watercolors have been a favorite among both plein aire and studio artists for centuries. The gum arabic binder of watercolor paints allows them to be rewetted time and again, and they make for fine and vibrant strokes both detailed and expressive. Watercolors can be lifted and manipulated, allowed to flow and spread, or used dry-brush for detail. Want buy watercolor paints and supplies?
