Ward Roberts. Ancient Art. Taman Sari (Yogyakarta) Taman Sari consisted of four distinct areas: a large artificial lake with islands and pavilions located in the west, a bathing complex in the centre, a complex of pavilions and pools in the south, and a smaller lake in the east.

Taman Sari (Yogyakarta)

Today only the central bathing complex is well preserved, while the other areas have been largely occupied by the Kampung Taman settlement. Since 1995 the Yogyakarta Palace Complex including Taman Sari is listed as a tentative World Heritage Site.[3][4] The name Taman Sari comes from the Javanese words taman, meaning a "garden" or "park" and sari, which means "beautiful" or "flowers". Hence, the name Taman Sari means an area of a beautiful garden adorned with flowers. An old article described it as a "water castle" (Dutch: waterkasteel); as by shutting the watergates, the complex would be completely immersed in water, leaving tall structures standing out.[5] The bathing area where the concubines would bathe while waiting for the sultan to choose one. Ward Roberts: Courts

When living in Hong Kong I remember being amazed at how much area was offered up for court/pitch activities, given how short they are on space. Many of these are most likely far above street level, and while not necessarily “green areas,” they give back crucial space that was taken by construction. Le Corbusier would be proud. These award winning 'Microcoasts' by Guallart Architects were constructed along the coast of Vinaròs, Castellón in Spain and completed in 2007.

Vinaròs is about halfway between Barcelona and Valencia on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, and therefore has the perfect climate for enjoying a little time sunbathing by the sea. Or not. Because much of its south shore is a succession of coves and promontories on a terrain composed of strata of easily fractured conglomerate rocks. Or in other words, a beautiful natural landscape, lots of sunshine, but very uncomfortable rocks to lie on. So, Vinaròs City Council, Generalitat Valenciana and the Tourism Ministry commissioned a solution from Guallart Architects who came up with this beautiful series of geometric wooden platforms which do little damage to the rock below and provide comfortable social spaces to enjoy the environment from.

Recordando a Antonio Sant’Elia
