H unter S. Thompson était au journalisme ce que Kerouac, Burroughs et Bukowski furent à la littérature et aux excès en tous genres . Comme son imposante biographie signée William McKeen sort ces jours-ci en français sous le titre "Journaliste et Hors la Loi" (critique à venir sur ce blog), je devrais en parler au présent. Mais j'en parle au passé. Car Hunter Stockton Thompson s'est suicidé d'un coup de revolver dans la tête, le 20 février 2005, à Aspen Colorado.

D epuis ce billet en forme d'hommage à la prose hallucinée de Hunter S. Thompson - "I wanna be a Gonzo journalist" - vous connaissez ma passion pour ce bon vieux "Duke", auteur entre autres des génialissimes "Hell's Angels" et "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" . A la faveur des vacances, je relis donc les œuvres complètes de Doc Hunter, inventeur dans le sillage de Tom Wolfe ("L'Etoffe des Héros", "Le Bûcher des Vanités"...) d'une nouvelle forme de narration journalistique à mi-chemin entre fanzine et littérature... Ça vous regonfle à bloc un journaliste-blogueur bousillé ;) Je me suis aussi replongé dans l'excellente biographie du grand homme signée William Mc Keen: "Journaliste et hors-la-loi" (Editions Tristam). Rien que le titre donne envie ! ...que m'est venue l'idée de vous proposer un petit précis de journalisme Gonzo à partir de quelques citations extraites de cet ouvrage précieux ...Ceux qui suivent mon compte Twitter y reconnaîtront l'un de mes épisodes prosélytes maniaques.
I had just arrived in New York in April, 1970 and I was staying with a Newspaper Owner called Dan RATTINER, who invite me to stay at his place in the Hamptons. I had been there a week when a call came through from the 'new' magazine called Scanlan's, ( named after a little-nown Nottingham Pig Farmer) and run by two 'tearaways' from San Francisco called Warren Hinckle III and Sydney Zion who burned through $750,000 of borrowed money in the space of nine months. Their Art Director, JC Suares, tracked me down with Anna's help and asked me if I would like to go to Louisville and work with an ex-Hell's Angel- who had shaved his head! called Hunter S. Thompson. I jumped at the chance.

Hunter S. Thompson was just 22-years-old in 1959 when he first began writing The Rum Diary , or what he initially called “the great American rum novel.” He envisioned it as something of a contemporary and rum-soaked version of The Great Gatsby , one of Thompson’s favorite books.
