Le bureau d’édition scolaire de l’ université du Michigan a lancé une traduction collaborative en anglais des 70 000 articles de l’ Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers (1751-1777) de Denis Diderot et Jean Le Rond d’Alembert :
“ This is a work that cannot be completed except by a society of men of letters and skilled workmen, each working separately on his own part, but all bound together solely by their zeal for the best interests of the human race and a feeling of mutual good will. ” —Diderot
The Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, par une Société de Gens de lettres was published under the direction of Diderot and d'Alembert, with 17 volumes of text and 11 volumes of plates between 1751 and 1772.
Hobson-Jobson is the short (and better-known) title of Hobson-Jobson: A Glossary of Colloquial Anglo-Indian Words and Phrases, and of Kindred Terms, Etymological, Historical, Geographical and Discursive , a historical dictionary of Anglo-Indian words and terms from Indian languages which came into use during the British rule of India . It was written by Henry Yule and Arthur C. Burnell and first published in 1886. Burnell had died before the work was finished, and most of it was finished by Yule, who, however, deeply acknowledges Burnell's contributions. [ 1 ] A subsequent edition was edited by William Crooke in 1903, with extra quotations and an index added. [ 2 ] The first and second editions are collector's items, though otherwise the second edition is widely available in numerous facsimile reprints.
