New Desalination Technique Also Cleans and Disinfects Water

In rural areas, almost half the population does not have access to clean water so the challenge is clear and present. The problem, of course, is that most of the planet’s water is saline. So finding ways to desalinate seawater is a key goal. Martin Bazant, postdoc Daosheng Deng, and colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, say they’ve developed a new way to desalinate water, known as shock electrodialysis, that not only removes salt but particulate matter and bacteria too. “Shock electrodialysis has the potential to enable more compact and efficient water purification systems,” they say.

One of the big problems with desalination is its cost. The most common of these is reverse osmosis. So in recent years, engineers have begun to study a process called electrodialysis. But there is a problem with electrodialysis. Bacteria tend to be smaller though. The LifeStraw makes dirty water clean. More than one billion people – one sixth of the world’s population - are without access to safe water supply.

The LifeStraw makes dirty water clean

At any given moment, about half of the world's poor are suffering from waterborne diseases, of which over 6,000 – mainly children – die each day by consuming unsafe drinking water. The world’s most prolific killer though is diarrhoeal disease from bacteria like typhoid, cholera, e. coli, salmonella and many others. Safe water interventions have vast potential to transform the lives of millions, especially in crucial areas such as poverty eradication, environmental upgradation, quality of life, child development and gender equality.

LifeStraw was developed as a practical response to the billions of people who are still without access to these basic human rights. View all The aptly-named LifeStraw is an invention that could become one of the greatest life-savers in history. DIY Fruit & Vegetable Wash

The acid in vinegar kills bacteria and helps to dissolve the wax and pesticide residues found on the skins of many fruits and vegetables. As an added bonus, this will help some fruits last longer in addition to making them a healthier option to eat. While it would be ideal to only purchase organically grown produce, or to grow your own, that isn't always an option.

This solution is a frugal alternative when 100% organic foods are not available. I still use this solution on the organic foods I buy, as it does a much better job of washing than water alone. I KNOW that this works, because the water is dirty after the produce has soaked and the apples and grapes have a slight white sheen on them from where the shiny wax had been. Sodium hydroxide. Sodium hydroxide is soluble in water, ethanol and methanol.

Sodium hydroxide

This alkali is deliquescent and readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide in air. Sodium hydroxide is used in many industries, mostly as a strong chemical base in the manufacture of pulp and paper, textiles, drinking water, soaps and detergents and as a drain cleaner. Corporate Responsibility

We conduct environmental safety assessments to help ensure our products will be safe for the environment when used as directed. These evaluations include such things as biodegradation and bioaccumulation, and impact on septic systems, aquatic life, birds, and other wildlife. We're also constantly working on more efficient, sustainable solutions for our product packaging that include using recyclable or compostable materials. For instance, it might surprise you to know that the lifecycle of our namesake Clorox® bleach, one of the world's most effective and inexpensive disinfectants, starts and ends with sodium chloride, common table salt. Brita® filters provide great-tasting water without the plastic waste from bottled water. World Forum for Hospital Sterile Supply. First Uses of New Solar Energy Technology Include Killing Germs on Medical Instruments. A revolutionary new solar energy technology that turns water into steam without boiling the entire container of water has become the basis for new devices to sanitize medical and dental instruments and human waste in developing countries, scientists say.

Prototypes of the devices, which need no electricity or fuel, were the topic of one of the keynote addresses at the opening of the 246th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world's largest scientific society. Naomi Halas, DSc, pointed out that almost 2 billion people live in areas of the world without a regular supply of electricity. That electricity is key to using machines called autoclaves, which produce scorching-hot steam to sterilize medical and dental instruments.

Ozone

On 26 June 2001, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved ozone, a gas that is strong oxidising agent capable of acting as a disinfectant*, as an antimicrobial agent for direct contact with foods of all types. Ozone Generators & Ozonation Generator Technology - The BiOzone Corporation. Ozone Drinking Water: Clean, Safe Water With Ozonation Treatment. Ozone has been used in drinking water plants since 1906 where the first industrial ozonation plant was built in Nice, France. Ozone as a viable process train is gaining more importance as the sources of pristine raw water are dwindling. Source waters from aquifers have to be replaced with surface waters.

How Does Ozone Water Purification Work? What is Ozone in Relation to Water Purification? Ozone - or O3 - is Mother Nature's purifier and disinfectant. The 3 stands for the three oxygen atoms that compose Ozone. The normal Oxygen we breathe is called O2, and is made up of only two chemically linked Oxygen atoms. You may have noticed that a sudden summer storm leaves behind a very distinct smell, sort of a "fresh scent" which lasts for about an hour. Orgonite and Orgone Zapper from Orgonise Africa.
