Genetic engineering (GE), or genetic modification, is the process of manipulating an organism’s DNA to display specific traits.

Gene splicing introduces new genetic material into an organism’s DNA, resulting in a genetically modified organism (GMO). More recently developed methodologies of genetic engineering include gene-editing. This technology allows scientists to target specific traits and either remove or rearrange them. In most cases, none of these modifications would be possible under natural circumstances and are only obtained through intensive research and experimentation in a laboratory.

The Problem with Genetic Engineering: It's Poorly Regulated and Harmful to Environmental Health Biased Research and Lack of Government Regulation Much of the current research around GMOs has been conducted by major companies in the industry, calling into question the legitimacy of their findings and possible conflict of interest. GMOs have no place in a sustainable agricultural system.

My research focuses on the “food system” (55% of my appointment). The food system involves all of the steps required to produce food and get it to our plates–from farming and processing to distribution and consumption. My work is unified by three main questions, (1) what changes are occurring? (2) what are the impacts of these changes on communities? (3) what can communities do to respond positively to these changes? These questions drive two main projects, (1) characterizing consolidation in food and beverage industries, and (2) bridging information gaps between producers and consumers through ecolabels. SUSTAINABLE FOOD CENTER | Austin, Texas. Whole Foods Market | Whole Foods Market. Whole Foods Market© commits to full GMO transparency - Whole Foods Market Newsroom. Company supports consumer’s right to know by setting five-year deadline for labeling GMOs Whole Foods Market announced today at Natural Products Expo West that, by 2018, all products in its U.S. and Canadian stores 1 must be labeled to indicate if they contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs) 2 .

Whole Foods Market is the first national grocery chain to set a deadline for full GMO transparency. “We are putting a stake in the ground on GMO labeling to support the consumer’s right to know,” said Walter Robb, co-CEO of Whole Foods Market. “The prevalence of GMOs in the U.S. paired with nonexistent mandatory labeling makes it very difficult for retailers to source non-GMO options and for consumers to choose non-GMO products. Accordingly, we are stepping up our support of certified organic agriculture, where GMOs are not allowed, and we are working together with our supplier partners to grow our non-GMO supply chain to ensure we can continue to provide these choices in the future.”
