Carnival of Space

Every week, a different webmaster or blogger hosts the carnival, showcasing articles written on the topic of space. It’s a great way to get to know the community, and to help your writing reach a wider audience. If you’d like to be a host for the carnival, please send email to carnivalofspace@gmail.com If you have no idea what a blog carnival is, check this out. Here’s a full archive of all the past Carnivals: Related Carnival of Space #393. Guide to Space. The Universe is Alive

When the destructive analysis of day is done, and all that is truly important becomes whole and sound again.” -Antoine de Saint-Exupery When you look out into the Universe, what is it that you typically think of? Do you think of reliable, fixed stars and constellations? The vast expanse of the Milky Way, with its memorable dust lanes and amorphous shapes? Maybe you think deeper and farther than that. Image credit: Misti Mountain Observatory. I couldn’t fault you for thinking like this; from mankind’s point of view, the Universe — for all intents and purposes — doesn’t change at all as we view it from one night to the next.

But does that really mean the Universe isn’t changing? Image credit: DC User Forum, of a short-exposure shot with a Sony A900 DSLR. Image credit: Tunc Tezel. Your Sky. By John Walker Welcome to Your Sky, the interactive planetarium of the Web.

Your Sky

You can produce maps in the forms described below for any time and date, viewpoint, and observing location. If you enter the orbital elements of an asteroid or comet, Your Sky will compute its current position and plot it on the map. Each map is accompanied by an ephemeris for the Sun, Moon, planets, and any tracked asteroid or comet. A control panel permits customisation of which objects are plotted, limiting magnitudes, colour scheme, image size, and other parameters; each control is linked to its description in the help file. The images present the names of the planets, stars, constellations and directions of the world. It is visible on the maps, the current constellation the Moon passes through and groups made by planets, the Moon and the constellations. If the Moon is visible from the current location, it is present on the images with it's current lunar phase and position on the sky. The dates and time of the sky maps are given in UTC (Universal Coordinated Time). On the first map North direction is downside.
