looking back the summer through fruits & sweets

We had a few cold rains, and the days are getting shorter by day. Suddenly hot tea and soups are gaining their appeal back. Although it can still be hot in the sun and cicadas are doing their best to make some noise, overall, we can tell the summer has come to its end. So it feels a little out of place - or frankly, foolish - to talk about summer foods now, but that's exactly what I'm doing.

Because I had so many of them, and most of them so good it'd be a shame if I leave them undocumented (which has happened alarmingly often around here). So if you can bear with me and have some time to spare, let me take you along for a look back on what the bounty of summer brought to us, by first going back to the beginning of July... ... when local summer fruits began appearing, starting with young green gooseberries (and odd purple ones).

Pies and Tarts There's nothing like a freshly baked pie to remind you of why you started baking in the first place. Cakes ..mmm....mmm... Simply Recipes Food and Cooking Blog. David Lebovitz. When I lived in a small apartment, I had to dial down buying everything.

As folks in Paris say: “Something in, something out” – meaning that if you brought something in, you had to get rid of something to make room for it. I lived ”smaller,” with fewer things, which was great because I pared down my collecting, and kept only what was essential. What a difference a few years, and a few more square meters, make. And now that I’ve got some more space in my apartment after moving a couple of years ago, I’m hitting the vide-greniers and brocantes again, scooping up odds and ends.

(And looking for places to put everything, all over again. The bad news is that there are relatively few bargains in Paris. It’s good to know the nomenclature. Garage sales and sidewalk sales aren’t permitted in France, so vide-greniers, or “empty the attic” sales, are the closest equivalent. We didn't get the nice, long Indian Summer I was hoping for... not quite, anyway. Yes, we're back to warm, sunny days, but it took less than a week for all the leaves to turn colour and drop this year. Who can blame them? Summer ended very abruptly this year - sunny and 28C one day, cold, drizzly and 13C the next... and then it stayed that was for over a week. I had plans for driving down to the river valley to take some photos of my city when it is at its absolute prettiest, but I hardly had time before all the trees went from a riot of illuminated golds, vibrant oranges and fiery reds to a forest of barren branches.

And withn fall, comes Thanksgiving - a full five weeks earlier than it comes for our neighbours to the south, though I honestly have no idea why. One thing that's a must is Pumpkin Pie, just like my dear Grandma used to make. Now for the dilemma - how many of each pie do I make, and in what form? 120ml (1/2 Cup) milk. Smitten kitchen. It has been a big year, and so much to look forward to in years to come — the many cakes, cookies, sweets and pastries in my birthday party organising future! Although this birthday was a simple celebration for three, I wanted to experiment with a few pink themed ideas that are sure to show up in future birthday celebrations. So, I hope you enjoyed the little selection showcased for this current theme, ‘Kids Party’ month. Next month, I hope you agree the choices will really kick start your day! But until then, here is a round up of this month’s goodies. { ‘Coconut ice’ doughnuts } Coconut ice is popular at birthday parties, so I decided to put a spin on an old favourite to create a coconut ice flavoured doughnut. . { Turkish Delight, Marshmallow and Pâte de Fruit } I could almost guarantee that every kids party I attended as a child included a mix of lollies.

. { Fig and raspberry hazelnut cake } A play on a Dorie Greenspan favourite. Thin Mint and Bailey’s Chocolate Float. Thin Mints and Bailey’s Chocolate Float ~ Is it possible for ice cream to make all things better?

Otherwise, feel free to read my wah-wah-ing intro first. I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now, but as you know, I am so utterly overwhlemed by phone calls, emails, IMs, all begging to be a part of this whirlwind of a Delicious social life that… Damn. I cannot, just cannot, blog that with a straight face. Let’s just say that other things have been pressing on my heart and mind so that I have been slightly undermotivated to do the overwhelming task of indexing. 101 Cookbooks.
