Resident Assistants. “My Room is Hate Free” Submitted by Amy Hutt, Resident Assistant I use this program to establish an inclusive community. Start out by making designs for people to decorate (like in the file I have attached) that say “My room is Hate FREE. Please help me keep (insert the name of your residence hall here) a safe place for everyone!” I like to have a related picture on the designs. Print out enough of the designs to have one for each room in your hall (and some extras for mess-ups) on one color of cardstock. To execute the program, set up a table in your residence hall (I prefer to do it right next to the front door) with all of the cardstock placards and markers, and invite people to make the commitment to have a hate-FREE room.

Have them color one if they do, and then write their room number on the back. Go around the hall after the program and hang up each completed design. This program leaves a visual representation of a very positive community. Resident Assistants. Sex in an Envelope By Amy Lee Wallace, Indiana State University Hello from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana!

My floor last year did a program called "Sex in an Envelope" with a male floor. Envelopes were made with male cards and female cards containing various messages of STD's that they had "caught" as well as pregnancy cards in the female envelopes. The point was to emphasize that sometimes casual sex can leave you "safe" but other times, STD's and/or pregnancy can occur. This program takes a little prep time in making the cards...I've attached those for reference...... Enjoy! Resident Assistants. Devoted to Diversity By Jennifer Maloney Residence Director Elizabethtown College Diversity is a very popular word on college campuses. For some, diversity is equivalent to the differences among people due to their race and ethnicity, but for others, the term diversity has expanded to include the celebration of differences and similarities of/in national origin, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age and socio-economic status.

I'm sure you have all experienced some sort of diversity training, but have you given any thought to including diversity in your own programming? As you begin to build community within your floor and building, it is important to appreciate the diversity among your residents. Here are some helpful hints on how to incorporate diversity into your programming plan: Residents to the Rescue: Use the residents of your floor Whether your floor consists of fifteen or fifty residents, there are bound to be differences among your residents.
