Renowned astrophysicist Carl Sagan once described a "baloney detection kit" — a set of tools that skeptical thinkers use to investigate any new concept. A few of the key tools include a healthy distrust of information that isn't independently verified, critically assessing an idea rather than becoming irrationally attached to it simply because it's intriguing, and a preference for simple explanations over wildly speculative ones. The waxing obsession with Nibiru, which conspiracy theorists say is a planet swinging in from the outskirts of our solar system that is going to crash into Earth and wipe out humanity in 2012 — or, in some opinions, 2011 — shows that an astonishing number of people "are watching YouTube videos and visiting slick websites with nothing in their skeptical toolkit," in the words of David Morrison, a planetary astronomer at NASA Ames Research Center and senior scientist at the NASA Astrobiology Institute. http://www.lifeslittlemysteries.com/1580-comet-elenin-planet-nibiru-doomsday-2012.html

The Watchers Share Email 609 Email Share Many people have now heard about the upcoming entry to the inner solar system of the comet Elenin ( http://elenin.org ) and there is a whole range of ideas and speculations about what this might entail. Comets have always been seen as harbingers of auspicious or (more commonly) ominous tidings and this one certainly is no exception. Ideas have been suggested that it is in fact a brown dwarf star, a spaceship or causes earthquakes. Regardless, this upcoming fall two comets, Honda and Elenin, later to be followed by Levy, will arrive creating a sequence of celestial bodies in the skies ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swhme7X7tWI ). http://thewatchers.adorraeli.com/2011/07/23/comets-honda-and-elenin-fulfill-mayan-hopi-and-christian-prophecies-as-the-mayan-calendar-approaches-its-end-on-october-28-2011/

Suspected Asteroid Collision Leaves Odd X-Pattern of Trailing Debris

Suspected Asteroid Collision Leaves Odd X-Pattern of Trailing Debris NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has observed a mysterious X-shaped debris pattern and trailing streamers of dust that suggest a head-on collision between two asteroids. Astronomers have long thought the asteroid belt is being ground down through collisions, but such a smashup has never been seen before. Asteroid collisions are energetic, with an average impact speed of more than 11,000 miles per hour, or five times faster than a rifle bullet.
