Can you use a Nikon SB-26 flash on a Canon XSI? Yes, it will work, but there are some things to be aware of.

Can you use a Nikon SB-26 flash on a Canon XSI?

Being an older flash not designed for the digital age, it may have an excessively high trigger voltage that could KILL your camera. Most any modern digital SLR cannot handle flash hot shoe trigger voltage greater than 6 volts. Some older flashes had voltages as high as over 100 volts! But I have NO idea what that particular Nikon's voltage is. There is a cure though, WEIN makes a unit called the SAFE SYNC. Next, the flash will have NO automation with your camera, or even a new Nikon digital. You would set your camera to it's sync speed or lower. I believe this is the point. Somebody correct me if i'm wrong. Keep in mind the SB-26 is a FILM camera flash. The SB-26 manual makes extensive reference to the "D" (delay) switch for multiple wireless flash photography. Unlike our digital cameras, with film the slave doesn't join in the routine during the preflashes, but the big difference, and the main reason for "D" mode is that the more modern Nikon film cameras perform flash metering DURING exposure by measuring (with a special flash meter) the flash exposure reflected off the face of the film.

The actual flash metering system on the old film cameras is really more sophisticated than what we have on our digital models, but the wireless capability is not nearly as good. Our digital cameras with Advanced Wireless Lighting allow us to easily use a wireless slave as a key light and get good results while enjoying full TTL flash. 3 SB-26s and pocket wizard - manual output control? - Photo.net Nikon Forum.

3 SB-26s and pocket wizard - manual output control? - Photo.net Nikon Forum

Hi Guys, I'm over here at the Nikon forum because I don't think what I want to do is available with Canon, for the amount of money I am prepared to spend. I want to wirelessly fire a set of 3 flashes on fully manual mode. The flashes will be grouped very close together (about 1 foot apart in a triangular pattern) and fired behind a huge umbrella. I want to be able to bring the power level of the flash heads all down, individually, to maybe 1/8 power. If I buy a Pocket Wizard Transmitter for my camera, and 1 Pocket Wizard receiver hooked up to one of the SB-26s, can I rely on this unit to wirelessly fire the other 2 units (and indeed, the Pocket Wizard to work in a way that has all three firing at the time the shutter is open, no preflashing or anything, just one nice POP!

Like I say, it will be for fully manual operation, and the need to dial down the power of all the units is very important to me. Thanks guys. PocketWizard für Nikon.
