And the bottom line with the new Susan G. Komen For The Cure organization is that the people who were once part of the organization that was known since its founding as The Susan G. It’s like when your local neighborhood bank gets bought out by a huge international financial conglomerate.

And it’s these new people at Komen that have changed a once non-political non-profit breast cancer fighting organization into a political profiteering organization with an agenda, beholden to the radical right. In fact, as The Washington Post’s Greg Sargent reports, it’s unclear Komen will fund Planned Parenthood in the future at all: Typical insensitivity from the radical right. Any questions? Love, Friendship, and Other Natural Disasters. I've been watching a lot of Glee lately, (who wouldn't; it's girl fabulous) which has been making me think a lot about relationships and the ways that my size has influenced them, both explicitly and subtly.

This is the subject I've talked about least, the one that's hardest and most painful to explain, and so it's the one that I think I need most to delve into. First off, when it comes to romance, being fat is a lot like being gay. I know that sounds weird, but hear me out. A gay man or woman never knows whom they can hit on safely, not for sure. Gaydar helps, as does internet dating, and society's gotten a lot more liberal. Then we blinked, and they were sidelined, pushed out of the political process faster than you can say, "Women are human beings too. " The way things have shaken out for women in post-revolution Egypt, it's easy to forget that it was a courageous young woman who summoned protesters to the streets in the first place. "Asma knew how to get to the guys, by saying 'If I can get out there, surely you can,'" said Mona Eltahawy, a New York-based Egyptian commentator and political analyst. But despite their valor and sacrifice, women protestors were quickly cast aside as the army consolidated its hold on power.

Indian worker left to die on Nokia assembly line. By Arun Kumar 9 November 2010 On October 31, a young female worker was left to die on the assembly line at the Nokia factory in southern India after her head and neck got trapped and crushed inside a robotic loading machine. The horrifying incident exposed conditions that prevail in most of the country’s factories, where human life and limb are subordinated to the drive to reap profits off of cheap labor.

Nokia, the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile telephones, employs around 7,000 workers at its Sriperumbudur plant, 40 kilometers from Chennai, the capital of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Seventy percent of the workers are female. Based in Finland, Nokia has over 123,000 employees in 120 countries, sales in more than 150 countries, global annual revenue of €41 billion and operating profit of €1.2 billion as of 2009. Ambika, the worker killed in the incident, was 22 years old. The next day, sensing the angry mood of the workers, Nokia management declared a holiday. M. We were house-sitting, and it was a pleasant change to patter around in a big, luxurious kitchen instead of my tiny apartment. My e-mail chimed, and I started to scroll through each one, reading comments on my blog and jotting down reminders to call back a few people.

My finger paused, trembling over the mouse, as I read the e-mail from a girl named Vit. “I am seventeen years old, live in Canada, and was diagnosed with bulimia when I was fourteen. I began my first diet when I was eight,” the e-mail read. “I have spent my entire life trying to be perfect and thin. It has ruined my life. I pause in the middle of the e-mail, closing my eyes as the familiar feelings of sadness and urgency washed over me. As the editor of OperationBeautiful.com, I regularly receive heart-wrenching e-mails from girls, women, and even men who are struggling with body image issues.
