C roatan Cottage in Manteo, North Carolina started life as a Sears Roebuck kit house in the early 1900s called “The Vallonia.” At the time it was described as “a prize bungalow home already cut and fitted,” that you could buy for just $1,979. Here’s how it looked in the original catalog: After the house was delivered in kit form by boat to the Manteo waterfront, it was unloaded and assembled here. This is how it looks today:
artist + author When I was a kid I once got in big trouble for scratching doodles of houses into a soft leather tabletop (hey, it was the '70s). From that point on I knew I was hooked. I always thought that it was cool to be able to draw what you could see but it was magical to draw what you could feel or imagine. I still think that.
Students get to spring and each new semester first with their youth, enthusiasm, commitment to our profession, their innovation and creativity. For me that means they have an edge over we older librarians. We are a bit burned out after our endless struggles to serve through the winters of librarianship, the chronic budget and other shortages that have always made librarianship more difficult and, alas, eroded our professional morale. The students, meanwhile, believe anew in our core values and carry on our profession’s enthusiastic desire and willingness to serve. They enthusiastically observe and share our faith in the redemptive power of good libraries in a community.
I hadn't planned particularly to post today but well here I am anyway ! Yesterday evening I was taken by a urgent need to clear & clean my creative space. (two desks facing, one for the iMac, the other for the sewing machine) Everything & anything had been piling up for weeks & weeks, tons of dust included, and I couldn't stand it anymore !! While I was at it, I decided to reorganize some things that I now use more regularly (order packing & wrapping essentials) They are now at a closer reach, which is so much smarter than before. (duh !) I can't tell you how good it did to me ... clearing & cleaning outside AND inside !
