Library Evolution | Feature The Library as a Digital Learning Space A high school in Connecticut is developing and honing a hybrid library that incorporates both traditional books and new digital technologies. By Bridget McCrea01/11/12 Wanting to develop a media center/library that would go beyond stacks of unused books, dark study corners, and low lighting, the staff at Simsbury High School in Simsbury, CT, worked with its district superintendent to determine a new direction for the facility.

Some of the key questions discussed concerned the need for a physical library in the information age, the role that books would play in the new facility, and how media literacy would be taught to students. A Hybrid Approach After looking at several options--including one that would eliminate the library's physical space completely--the team decided to use a hybrid concept for the new Simsbury High School library/media center.

The new library was built with funds from the school's construction budget. Online video service gives coaches new teaching tools | McClatchy. This season, Tigard signed up for Hudl, a service that allows teams to catalog video of games and practices online. “All the young guys on my staff are really excited about it. Ruecker said the service allows for more focused instruction. Learningcontract - home. Changing the Way We Teach. Faculty "Buy-In"--To What? Technology Adoption | Viewpoint Faculty 'Buy-in'--to What? By Trent Batson04/06/11 The phrases “faculty resistance,” or the “lack of faculty buy-in” to adopting information technology for the core teaching/learning paradigm, have become by-words in academia. Yet both phrases are empty and lead nowhere; they are phatic, having a social purpose (bonding among technology advocates) but they contain no useful information.

Technology advocates urge faculty members to go away from what they’ve been doing but don’t explain what they should go toward. It is not enough to go toward a set of new teaching and learning practices--such as “high-impact learning practices” (George Kuh)--because a set of practices does not a coherent theory make, nor do they alter the institutional zeitgeist that places strict limits on change. The goal cannot and should not be just to use technology. Therefore, undergraduate students in general hear a dumbed-down version of disciplinary facts.
