Ammu Prashantini, LMSW Staff, NASW-NYC Four years ago I graduated with my MSW degree from what is now known as the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. My method was in Community Organizing and Planning and after two wonderful years in grad school, I was ready to enter this world as a professional.

I planned to get my license first, especially since I was told it’s easiest to get it right out of school. So, immediately after graduating, I took the review course offered to alumni and purchased study material from Social Work Examination Services (those blue & white books that cover content and provide practice exams). I even bought the CD-ROM “Autotest” and I decided to study and register with NYSED and ASWB. But, inevitably, there will be the need to upload a resume to a company’s website, even with the best “in.” This can be challenging if your resume isn’t optimized for the Applicant Tracking Software (ATS). If your resume is a .PDF, has graphic design work, color, funky fonts, tables, or bullets, or is a functional resume, it’s probably ATS-unfriendly. Or, parts may be readable, but tables, text boxes, or bullets might be translated into jumbled data that you might spend a lot of time fixing each time you submit. Nearly two years ago I read an article by Laura Smith-Proulx, Award-Winning Executive Résumé Writer, called Is Your Résumé Summary Boring Employers? In her article, she asserts that jobseekers need to state accomplishments upfront in the summary, not simply save them all for the work history. I took exception to Laura’s assertion, thinking why reveal the good stuff so early in the game. So I contacted Laura and asked for her reasons behind showing the firepower so soon on a résumé.

I don’t recall her exact words, but the general gist was get the employers’ attention quick and, yes, save enough fire power for the rest of your résumé.
