People of Color: Share Your Experiences in the Occupy Movement Join the Oakland Coalition to Stop Goldman Sachs! "Phantom Control": Israel's Secret Service and the Occupation. Yael Berda's new book The Bureaucracy of Occupation sheds light on Israel's more invisible control over the Palestinians - Precis In recent years Israel's control over the Palestinian people in the occupied territories has changed. While the presence of the Israeli army has been greatly reduced, the occupation has taken a more invisible form. In her new book The Bureaucracy of Occupation, attorney Yael Berda sheds light on how the Israeli secret service (the Shabak) exploits every point of contact with Palestinians, especially the imposed permit system, to recruit informants to further its control over the population.

Activist Anan Quzmar of Birzeit University's Rights to Education campaign tells The Real News' Lia Tarachansky how this form of "phantom control" makes political involvement and activism nearly impossible. Award-winning film 'Ibdis' reflects Palestinian spirit that refuses to be destroyed. Earlier this summer I shared reflections on my journey to Ibdis, where my father introduced my brother and I to the ruins of our grandparents’ village, now a nameless cluster of debris on a commercial Israeli farm. It was a haunting homecoming, my own bittersweet “Birthright” voyage. And this is truly the experience of our people—whether in the Diaspora, under occupation, or living out our days as lesser members within the racist structure of the Israeli state, to be a Palestinian means to bear a very unique burden.

It means to grow up with ghosts, shadows of what could have been, and the constant horror of what continues to be. Yet I dare to say that the overwhelming spirit of our people is one of beautiful, improbable hope. In this film, also dedicated to the village-that-was, Ibdis, several young and talented artists (two of whom I am proud to call my siblings!) It is a message to Palestinians everywhere to remember where they come from. Courage take heart. All things arabic (Sudanese Hip Hop On The Motherf***ing Beat New...) Media and Videos « TONATIERRA. Newton’s Love for Freedom. Today marks what would have been Huey P. Newton’s 69th birthday. While most know Newton for his leadership as co-founder of the Black Panther Party, comparatively fewer know that Newton went on to earn a Ph.D. in social philosophy at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1980.

He also authored several books and articles, including the memoir Revolutionary Suicide. Newton’s start in political organizing kicked off at Merritt College in Oakland, CA. Newton’s early adolescence, however, was marked by volatility. Like many other young black men who were — and continue to be — cops in Oakland, Newton’s desire to see a safer community led him to create Panther programs like Free Breakfast for Children Program and the Oakland Community School.
