One of the main points of green design is taking advantage of local materials, which promote the well being of communities and save emissions in transportation. With that idea in mind, designers Pablo di Muzio, Lucila Flombaum and Natalia di Muzio began investigating which responsible resources they could find in Argentina, and found natural wool felt: a biodegradable, low-tech fabric with an aesthetic feel that can be adapted to current trends. Afterwards, they developed a set of patterns to create bags and home accessories with little waste. "The products have a simple and sincere language, they express what they are and how they were conceived, trying to create a connection with the user and the productive process," they explain. The Mamushka model is a set of three pieces: wallet, purse, and bag.

Felt Vessels by Crafted Systems

By collaborating with the YWCA women’s shelter to create custom-designed felt pieces, Crafted Systems becomes an empowering platform for women-in-transition to develop real-world skills that they can also take pleasure in. The felt vessels are a few of the various products of that collective effort, woven from 100% natural wool felt which are waterjet, diecut, and later hand-assembled. Industrial designer and founder of Crafted Systems, Aurelie Tu, came up with a series of geometrical ‘modules’ woven together by overlapping the edges to produce the felt vessels. Each basket is unique in texture and dimension due to the hand-crafted quality, and never the smooth and perfectly-chiseled products you get from mass-manufacturing processes. Huge thanks to Aurelie Tu for the lovely images! Sparkly felt bag by Grace Kim. The Sessile Handbag by interaction designer Grace Kim is an exploration in merging natural forms with technology.

So I decided to start a new project that I could easily do in small doses here and there before I go to bed at night. I’ve started my cake topper!! Does this seem familiar to any of you? Last year my friend Mary asked me to make her cake topper. So I suppose this project grew from Mary’s. Above you can see two of the three major supplies that you need for needle felting – wool roving (which is basically loose strands of natural and dyed wool) and these special barbed needles (felting needles). Basic bird shape Next I balled up some roving using the color that I wanted to use for the base, then continually stabbed it with the needle while shaping it.

Melina and Dodd Raissnia of Peace Industry own and operate their own workshop in Iran where they have perfected the best methods for producing high quality felt rugs, all of which are designed by Melina. The method is a revitalization of the oldest rug tradition from Iran that had been on the verge of extinction. After several trips to Tehran, they found a small number of villages where a few old men were practicing the ancient art of felt making. It became apparent that this ancient and unknown tradition would die out quickly if nothing changed. The tradition of felt rugs began in Iran in the Neolithic age. Felt rugs are not woven but pressed to create an incredibly strong, dense textile.

The ancient felting process does not require the use of chemicals or toxins. For a look at the felting process watch the 15-minute film with Haj Ali, one of the last felters still working in Iran, a fifth generation Iranian felter.
