Behind VFX | The Art and Science of Visual Effects and Filmmaking | Behind Visual Effects. News - 2013. Srinivas mohan's Blog | Visual Effects | Page 2. These days, most, if not all films have a VFX shot. People think of VFX as the force responsible for aliens, robots, or high-end action sequences etc. Can you give us an example of something at the other end of the spectrum, something simple, which would also constitute as a VFX shot? In the movie Robot, we have one person who played the role of a scientist as well as the robot. Almost every shot requires both the characters in the same frame. It is a simple shot but a lot of work goes behind creating such shots.

There seems to be a lot of international criticism of Indian VFX, that the artists are trained technically but lack the artistic component? We do lack artistic talent. What are some ways that this perception and/or reality can be changed? Presently, the industry is growing in different directions. How do you think the VFX industry in India will look after 10 years? If the development continues at the same pace, we might not do well in the future. Yes definitely. Budgeting VFX. Budgeting VFX I covered some of the basics of this in the post/podcast Bidding and Preproduction I’ll be going into more detail in this posting.

As previously discussed budgeting visual effects can be very difficult. You have the possible issues of developing new looks and techniques. How long will this take and how many people? Add to this mix the director’s creative changes that happen on any film project. Should you calculate 2 takes? 5 takes? I’ll be discussing feature films here. The average Hollywood feature film is now approximately $100 million. Why are visual effects so expensive? The first step in the process is someone at the studio plugs in a guestimate for the VFX. Initially the script is broken down by the VFX producer on the film (likely with a supervisor involved) or it may be done by a VFX company’s producer and supervisor. These ballpark estimates are submitted to the studio to evaluate. All of these estimates are based on actual experience and gut feelings.

Imaging the future symposium | 9 & 10 juillet 2013 | neuchâtel - suisse. VISUAL DEFECTS. Under the Dome with Encore VFX Supervisor Stephan Fleet : Art of the Edit. Before he attended USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he got his MFA in Film Production in 2006, Stephan Fleet worked as a graphics designer in the Los Angeles area. At USC, he was mentored by Professor Ian Sander, who also worked, along with wife Kim Moses, as the show runner for the series Ghost Whisperer. That exposure to TV production convinced Fleet that this was the direction he wanted to take his career.

Sander hired his mentee to work on pitches as a development associate. The writer's strike interrupted that work, but post-strike, Fleet partnered with friends from USC who had formed Master Key Visual Effects. There, Fleet soon helped lead a team of about 30 artists to complete hundreds of visual effects per week for the series Knight Rider (2008). After an amicable leave-taking, Fleet joined Encore in Hollywood, eventually helping the post production company expand a budding VFX division.
