Norris Reservoir in east Tennessee extends 73 miles up the Clinch River and 56 miles up the Powell from Norris Dam. It was the first dam TVA built, and is named for Senator George Norris of Nebraska, author of the legislation that created TVA. Norris is a popular tourist and recreation destination. In the 1930s, TVA established demonstration public parks at several locations on Norris Reservoir, including Cove Lake, Big Ridge, and the area around Norris Dam.
These parks later became the nucleus of Tennessee’s state park system. Norris features numerous hiking trails. The River Bluff Trail is the longest at 3.1 miles and offers rich pockets of wildflowers. The Edge Path is a shady corridor with wheelchair access. Water sports at Norris include boating, water skiing, swimming, and excellent fishing. Norris Dam Visitor Center The Norris Dam Visitor Center is located off Interstate 75 exit 122 north of Knoxville.

The William Hastie Natural Area is nestled among old homes in sleepy neighborhoods, but through the twisty hills snakes close to 4 miles of singletrack trail and old roads. Don't worry about mud, even on the aptly named Sink Hole lowland trail, because fine bridges have been erected to carry bikers over mud (and the steep gulleys of the higher sections). Pickett State Park lies within the 19,200-acre Pickett State Forest, and is adjacent to the massive 120,000 acre Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. In 1933, the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company donated nearly 12,000 acres of land to the State of Tennessee to be developed as a forest recreational area. Initial development of the area by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) occurred between 1934 through1942. The CCC constructed hiking trails, five rustic cabins, a recreation lodge, a ranger station and a 12-acre lake.
The park memorializes and preserves the unique work of the CCC who first developed the park. The Pickett CCC Museum features interpretative exhibits and artifacts, depicting the Civilian Conservation Corps’ contributions to Tennessee’s parks and natural areas, while recognizing the CCC’s extensive efforts across the country. The park encompasses more than 26,000 acres sprawled across the eastern top of the rugged Cumberland Plateau. Laced with cascades, gorges, waterfalls, streams and lush stands of virgin hardwood timber, the park beckons those who enjoy nature at her finest. Fall Creek Falls, at 256 feet, is one of the highest waterfall in the eastern United States. Other waterfalls within the park include Piney Falls, Cane Creek Falls and Cane Creek Cascades. In 1937, the federal government began purchasing the badly eroded land around Fall Creek Falls. The following year, the Works Project Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began restoring the forest and constructing park facilities.

Some, like Fall Creek Falls and Burgess Falls, are surrounded by state parks, while others, like Virgin Falls in White County, are protected through the State Natural Areas program. Located about 20 miles southeast of Sparta, Virgin Falls is fed by an underground stream that emerges from a cave near the lip of the falls. After plummeting 110 feet, the stream immediately disappears again in another cave at the bottom of an eroded bowl at the base of the falls. The hike to Virgin Falls from the parking lot is an eight-mile round trip. From the Virgin Falls parking lot, the trail stays on top of the plateau through a second-growth forest of mixed hardwoods.
