At the same time, consuming domestic news with a critical eye is vital to enhancing democracy and defeating narrow-mindedness. Students also need an understanding of the world’s economy, politics, social structures and environment in order to make the best decisions about how to live their own lives. North Carolina in the World North Carolina in the World is a statewide collaborative effort to strengthen K-12 international education. At the request of Governor Mike Easley, the University of North Carolina's Center for International Understanding coordinates the effort. More than 100 North Carolina education, policy and business leaders are involved to help prepare students to thrive in the global marketplace of the 21st century. 2. 3. 4. Primary Source promotes history and humanities education by connecting educators to people and cultures throughout the world. 5. 7. Teaching world cultures. The mission of the North Carolina State Board of Education calls upon teachers to prepare students to be “globally competitive for work and postsecondary education.” An important part of meeting that goal is to introduce students to world cultures in instruction. Some teachers welcome the challenge of global learning, and look for every opportunity to infuse their lessons with international content.

Many teach cultures expertly, but we’ve all heard horror stories of cultural lessons gone wrong — the discussion that succeeds only in reinforcing stereotypes, the “re-enactment” of cultural or religious ceremonies that show gross disrespect. Lack of knowledge or understanding, or even good intentions but poor planning can mar students’ learning about cultures. Many teachers steer clear of cultural content for fear of making embarrassing mistakes.
