DIY: A Creative Idea For Gift Wrapping

Whenever I give gifts I always like to try and get creative with the packaging to make the whole experience that much more extra special. I try and find old papers from around my home that I can recycle and objects that can add a little bit of prettiness. For the birthdays that have just gone by I used my 2012 calendar by The Wild Unknown to create unique packaging and then on top, placed a stem of fake flowers and a feather.

DIY: How To Make Rose Water. UPDATE: This post originally ran on January 31st 2013, but with Spring around the corner we wanted to share it again!

DIY: How To Make Rose Water

Valentine’s Day is just a couple of weeks away and it’s a time to show the special people in your life how much you love them…but it’s also a great time to pamper yourself! Loving and taking care of yourself is always important, and this DIY will help you do just that. Rose water was first made by chemists in the Islamic Golden Age as a perfume and beverage, and in the years since it has become quite popular for a number of uses. Most commonly it is used as a toner or body spray for the skin – the natural fragrance and moisturizing properties make it especially refreshing.

It can also be used to flavor certain dishes, or added to lemonade for a delicious summer beverage. What you need: fresh roses, a large pot and distilled water. There are a couple of ways to make rose water. Start by plucking the petals from the roses – you won’t need the bulb or stems. Photos by Julia. How To Make A Zen Board. Being present is such an important component of living a happy, peaceful, and fulfilling life.

How To Make A Zen Board

We’re all about living in the now here at Free People, and we’re taking every step we can to enjoy each moment, appreciate the little things, and truly live. Zen boards are a magical tool that can help you practice appreciating each moment as it comes, steering you away from living in the past or focusing on the future. A zen board is made of a special material that allows you to “paint” on it using water. Moments later, the water evaporates and you’re left with a blank canvas on which you may begin anew! Knowing that the water will soon evaporate makes it quite easy for you to focus your attention on the present moment, allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty of your temporary creation. DIY Lavender Tea Tree Surface Cleaner.

This guest post comes from our contributor FP Naomi.

DIY Lavender Tea Tree Surface Cleaner

This general-use cleaner is chemical free and a gentle eliminator of harmful bacteria. Why is that important? Believe it or not, our bodies and health depend on a rich environment of microbes. We don’t want to wipe them all out. Strong anti-bacterial products have their place in hospitals and things of the like, but not so much in your home. You can easily make your own surface cleaner to avoid chemicals and microbe extermination. You’ll Need (Makes 12 oz 1 Spray Bottle 1 Cup Water ¼ Cup Distilled White Vinegar 10 Drops Tea Tree Oil 10 Drops Lavender Oil Directions: Add water & vinegar to spray bottle. 2.

Light Bulb Vase – DIY Home Décor

These are some of our most loved posts by you, our amazing readers. Don’t throw away those old light bulbs just yet! DIY Painted Feathers. I’ve always loved the idea of painting fake feathers, and with festival season underway it seemed like the perfect time to do it.

DIY Painted Feathers

I originally thought of these purely as decorations but then it occurred to me that they’d be a great finishing touch for a festival outfit. This is a great activity to do outside on a warm sunny day, and once you start it’s slightly addicting! What you need: fake feathers, paint (I used acrylic paint), and a paint brush. I got this paint from Utrecht and I love it. I added a little bit of water to the paint before applying to the feathers, and they absorbed the paint almost like watercolor.

After the entire feather was covered I added some dots and lines with white paint. Get as creative and colorful as you want with the feathers! I wanted to add in some of the smaller brown feathers to my arrangement, so for those I kept it simple and painted them in colorful ombre shades. DIY Floral Denim Patches – How To Patch Your Jeans. UPDATE: This post originally ran on February 20th 2013 but we love this DIY for festival season so we’re bringing it back!

DIY: Summer Camera Strap

I recently found a way to recycle old lightweight scarves into cute little camera straps — it’s pretty quick to do, too. All you need is a few bits and bobs and a hot glue gun. The strap hangs comfortably over your shoulder and adds a bit on interest to your outfit, too. DIY Projects – DIY Fishtail Friendship Bracelets At Coachella. One of our lovely house guests this past weekend at Coachella was Jenni of the blog I Spy DIY – so of course we had to get our craft on one morning before heading to the festival!

DIY Projects – DIY Fishtail Friendship Bracelets At Coachella

Jenni brought supplies for three projects: friendship bracelets, wrapped sunglasses and flower crowns. I loved the colorful bracelets and thought it was such a perfect festival DIY – if you’re going to a festival with a friend or group of friends, make these bracelets as a symbol of your trip and to remember the festival by. What you need: Scissors, cord (the cord is pictured above on the larger spools), pliers, lobster clasps, jumprings, end caps, super glue. DIY Wood Photo Transfers. Geo Painted Wooden Kitchen Tools. I always love incorporating natural wood into my home – especially in the kitchen. I was feeling really inspired by our Sacred Geometry lookbook, and thought it could be cool to interpret the idea using wooden kitchen tools like a cutting board and some spoons. Geometric shapes are so simple, yet very impactful at the same time. One bold shape is striking enough to change the entire look and feel of a cutting board. DIY Feather Wall Hanging. As FP Brigette already mentioned in this post, she and I, along with one of our other really good friends, have been in the process of moving into a new house together.

Valentine’s Day DIY – Stamped Spoons & Pendants. I know some of you might not want to think about it just yet… but Valentine’s Day is approaching. I was thinking about DIYs for the holiday and I really like the idea of stamping spoons and pendants as gifts for someone you love. I always think the sweetest Valentines are the handmade ones, or the really subtle and thoughtful ones.

Friendship bracelets have always given me a sentimental feeling — they can bring back thoughts that might be easily lost. DIY Reversible Instagram Coasters. Tile coasters are always great for around the house. They protect surfaces from your sweating drink, and they can be great décor accents. I love the idea of tile coasters, but I also love the idea of using instagram images as coaster surfaces. DIY Personalized Envelope Lining. How To Make Laundry Detergent. Just as we take care in the food we put inside our bodies, I also feel that it’s very important to feel good about what we’re putting on our bodies.

Of course this includes beauty products… but what about the detergent that you use to wash our clothes? Today I have a very simple recipe for a homemade laundry detergent that uses just three ingredients.
