Behind the Scenes of “Untold”: Exclusive Interview with James Reka

Perhaps no other city experiences such a drastic change during this time, than does Berlin, which come April is flooded with people riding bikes, picnicking in parks and soaking up the sunshine. Earlier this year, Reka came to Berlin as the inaugural artist-in-residence at the Urban Nation Workspace in the former West Berlin neighborhood of Schöneberg. His abstract paintings of women pulse with a dynamic spirit that captures not only the city’s newfound spring life, but also Berlin’s struggles with gentrification.

Working in Schöneberg, an area noted for both its upscale residences and regular prostitutes, Reka is no stranger to this paradox of imported poshness and crude authenticity. Pencil and acrylic on paper mounted on panel, Drawing on the paper Maki Ohkojima is a 27-year old Japanese painter who creates sprawling yet intricate paintings that often feature imagery pertaining to mother earth and animals. Over the years she has developed in interesting style she calls – quite straightforwardly – “the mural beyond the frame.” “When drawing a picture, I always think that the picture I am drawing in that moment is merely one part of a larger world and narrative,” says Ohkojima. She compares her feelings to the frustration we’ve all felt when encountering a beautiful landscape. Installation images of “in the forest” (2012) Ohkojima is a frequent participant in the Wall Art Festival and earlier this year she spent several days in India creating a sprawling mural on the walls of a classroom.

Exploring the unknown helps me appreciate the existence of life. I like to tell stories with my paintings with symbols. The web formations in several of my paintings deal with something that has been woven or created relating to my past, and other generations before my existence. Roby Dwi Antono.
