A Tiny French Woodland Home. The home rests on timber piers standing on stones on the steep slope of the woodland floor.

This provides a south facing balcony designed like the bow of a ship. The timbers are all hand hewn with axes retaining much of the natural curves of the wood. The frame [see picture No.1] is filled with a rough wattle and filled with cob, a mixture of clay, sand and straw [No.2] mixed by foot stomping in an old bath tub [No.3]. The insulation below the floor is sheep's wool [No.4] and the window are reclaimed [No.5]. The roof of the house is built curved to provide additional roof space which gives Menthé enough space for a sleeping loft [No.6]. Archive Reclaimed Space. Guest Post by Tracen Gardner I came up with the idea for Reclaimed Space when I needed a living space on my ranch outside Shiner, Texas.

There was no electricity or running water on the site, which is located 15 minutes from the nearest hardware store. I did not want to use all that energy driving back and forth and was concerned with not only with time constraints but also the confusion involved in meeting sub contractors in a remote area. I was afraid of not completing the project in time and that it would take too long to “dry-in” if I worked only on weekends. I’ve always wanted to use that word in the description of one of the featured homes, shacks, cabins, or retreats here. After traveling by bicycle for three years, I was ready to have a place to put some heavy books, a sewing machine, and stored foods. In September of 2009 I began building myself a tiny house on a flatbed trailer using salvaged materials. Receiving such a positive response, in May of 2010 I began, with the partnership of fellow tradeswoman Amy, to build a second tiny house on a trailer. I feel this is a dangerous question, which holds within it the seeds of a disruptive innovation, so read on at your own risk. Rethinking what a house is could change your life, and perhaps the world. Let me explain through my own experience. Voluntary simplicity When I was an intellectually promiscuous doctoral student my eyes happened to fall upon a copy of Henry Thoreau’s, Walden, a fiery “simple living” manifesto, first published in 1854. It shook me awake from a deep slumber, opening my eyes to how consumerist cultures were foolishly celebrating a mistaken idea of freedom, leaving people materially rich but too often empty and twisted inside. Thoreau’s writings also offered poetic insight in the alternative way of living now known as “voluntary simplicity”, a living strategy that seeks to minimise material needs in order find enrichment and purpose in non-materialistic sources of meaning and satisfaction. Japanese House Built for $11,000 by Off Grid Champion - Brian Schulz.

The Japanese Forest House is a confluence of my love of small spaces, my passion for local materials, and my fascination with tradtional Japanese architecture. For those familiar with the intensely refined art of traditional Japanese carpentry, applying the title of 'Japanese' onto my house might be laying it on a bit thick. It's true I've fallen short of the refinement found in the homes of the upper classes, however, the work still embraces the design principles that make the traditonal tea houses (which were, ironically, modeled after peasant shacks) so appealing. Oversized beams, live edge slabs, natural timbers, real plaster walls, and minimal decoration, all encourage a deep sense of calm.

Modern hobbit house: a tiny cob home. Classic Hand Tools Limited - Lost Art Press. Ref: BK-MAJSFAT When it comes to exploring the shadowy history of how 17th-century furniture was built, few people have been as dogged and persistent as Jennie Alexander and Peter Follansbee. For more than two decades, this unlikely pair – an attorney in Baltimore and a joiner at Plimoth Plantation in Massachusetts – have pieced together how this early furniture was constructed using a handful of written sources, the tool marks on surviving examples and endless experimentation in their workshops. The result of their labour is the new Lost Art Press book “Make a Joint Stool from a Tree: An Introduction to 17th-century Joinery.”

This book starts in the woodlot, wedging open a piece of green oak, and it ends in the shop with mixing your own paint using pigment and linseed oil. It’s an almost-breathtaking journey because it covers aspects of the craft that most modern woodworkers would never consider. Joint stools are a fascinating piece of British and early American furniture. Ecospace. Turn Soda Cans Into Aluminum Roofing Shingles!
