" That was then. This is now. According to GlobalWebIndex, Google+, with 343-million active users, has become the second largest social network globally. As Vic Gundotra, Google's senior VP of engineering, observed, "That is a lot of ghosts" Facebook is still the biggest of the social networks by a large margin. All three of the major global social networks, Facebook, Google+, and Twitter are growing by leaps and bounds. Say hello to the new look of Google Plus (screenshots) Even with Twitter's growth, however, "Google+, who despite being branded a failure or ghost town by large portions of the media, grew in terms of active usage by 27% to 343m users to become the number 2 social platform.

Indeed so, I've long thought that Google's integration of Google Plus into many of its services would lead to massive growth. Mind you, I don't find this much of a surprise. Google+ acquired social startup Fridge late last week in what marks Google’s social network’s first acquisition.

The sum of the acquisition wasn’t disclosed, according to Silicon Alley Insider, which broke the story. But according to the Fridge blog, the startup’s team of four would be folding into the Google+ team and Fridge would be “closing up shop.” The reason Google+ bought fridge was apparently because of the Fridge team’s relevant experience. Fridge was a social group startup created by Austin Chang, and it fit right into the Google+ disruption plan, because it was a social network built around private sharing. From what it looks like, Fridge had the same idea of Google+’s Circles, just envisioned in a slightly different way. The site’s explanatory video, for example, demonstrated how you could make networks to organize and plan a party.
