Internet Relay Chat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Internet Relay Chat ( IRC ) is a protocol for real-time Internet text messaging ( chat ) or synchronous conferencing . [ 1 ] It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels , [ 2 ] but also allows one-to-one communication via private message [ 3 ] as well as chat and data transfer , [ 4 ] including file sharing . [ 5 ] IRC was created in 1988. Client software is available for every major operating system that supports Internet access. [ 6 ] As of April 2011, the top 100 IRC networks served more than half a million users at a time, [ 7 ] with hundreds of thousands of channels [ 7 ] operating on a total of roughly 1,500 servers [ 7 ] out of roughly 3,200 servers worldwide. Priming (psychology) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Priming is an implicit memory effect in which exposure to a stimulus influences a response to a later stimulus. It can occur following perceptual , semantic , or conceptual stimulus repetition. For example, if a person reads a list of words including the word table , and is later asked to complete a word starting with tab , the probability that he or she will answer table is greater than if not so primed. Another example is if people see an incomplete sketch that they are unable to identify and they are shown more of the sketch until they recognize the picture, later they will identify the sketch at an earlier stage than was possible for them the first time. [ 1 ] The effects of priming can be very salient and long lasting, even more so than simple recognition memory . [ 2 ] Unconscious priming effects can affect word choice on a word-stem completion test long after the words have been consciously forgotten. [ 2 ] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priming_(psychology)
The last time we had anything that stored pencils in it, it was a tin case emblazoned with Batman, and not the black clad Dark Knight, no, we’re talking blue and gray garb. So it’s been a while since we’ve carried around a bunch of #2′s. Thanks to this pencil holder from Travelteq, we’re beginning to think about dusting off that old sharpener once again.

Illuminating Repurposed Vintage Relics | Cool Material

Scrolling through the work of Benclif Designs is like taking a stroll through some demonic kid’s laboratory. At first it all seems very reminiscent of the work of a wiser Sid from Toy Story. Old toys and appliances deconstructed and rebuilt to serve an entirely different purpose. That’s only your first thought though, your second is, “Holy crap, I want all this stuff.” By taking vintage relics (rotary dial phones, percolators, and much more) and turning them into works of art that provide a bit of light for the far side of your leather sofa, Benclif Designs has got us asking questions like, “Does a vintage Fischer Price toy lamp work in this room?” $64+ http://coolmaterial.com/home/illuminating-repurposed-vintage-relics/
ScienceDaily (Jan. 21, 2011) — Participating in an 8-week mindfulness meditation program appears to make measurable changes in brain regions associated with memory, sense of self, empathy and stress. In a study that will appear in the January 30 issue of Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging, a team led by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) researchers report the results of their study, the first to document meditation-produced changes over time in the brain's grey matter. "Although the practice of meditation is associated with a sense of peacefulness and physical relaxation, practitioners have long claimed that meditation also provides cognitive and psychological benefits that persist throughout the day," says Sara Lazar, PhD, of the MGH Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program, the study's senior author.

Spineless Classics Book Posters | Cool Material

We’re all for the babes of Baywatch adorning the walls, but ever since we didn’t need flotation devices to swim, our tastes have been slightly more refined. Rather than plastering your walls with sweet babes and the latest Lambo, go more literary with these Spineless Classic Book Posters. Entire texts of classic books converted into a wall mountable picture that’s significant to the story. “Around the World in Eighty Days” with a globe; “Heart of Darkness” in the shape of Africa; you get the idea.
Normally we wouldn’t shell out more than a couple of bucks on a deck of cards. Ours are usually the $2 packs that will quickly be ruined by spilled beer and nacho cheese stains on poker night. That being said, we could be persuaded to pay the extra few dollars to get a deck this stylish. Our magic skills may be lacking (our go-to trick is 52 Card Pickup, and that—most would argue—is not actually a trick), but we can still appreciate the dark appeal of these Bicycle Black Tiger Playing Cards. You can choose between a deck of black and white or black, white and red. Plus, the extra caution you pay when you’re using them, might just save you a card table felt top or two. $7
