Abdij Sint Benedictusberg Vaals. Bethlem Royal Hospital. The Bethlem Royal Hospital is a hospital for the treatment of mental illness located in London, United Kingdom and part of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

Bethlem Royal Hospital

Although it has moved three times from its original location, it is recognised as Europe's first and oldest institution to specialise in mental illnesses. It has been known by various names including St Mary Bethlehem, Bethlem Hospital, Bethlehem Hospital and, informally and most notoriously, Bedlam. The Hospital is closely associated with King's College London and in partnership with the King's College London Institute of Psychiatry is a major centre for psychiatric research.

It is part of both the King's Health Partners academic health science centre and the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health. Originally the hospital was sited near Bishopsgate just outside the walls of the City of London. The word bedlam, meaning uproar and confusion, is derived from the hospital's prior nickname. 1247–1633[edit] Poundbury. The development is built on land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall. It is built according to the principles of Prince Charles, who is known for holding strong views challenging the post-war trends in town planning that were suburban in character. Plan[edit] The development is built to a traditional high-density urban pattern, rather than a suburban one, focused on creating an integrated community of shops, businesses, and private and social housing.

To some degree, the project shows similarities with the contemporary New Urbanism movement, except that the design influences are, of course, European. The overall plan was developed in the late 1980s by the Luxembourgian architect Leon Krier, and construction started in October 1993. Jon Rogers : Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design

Why? I am lecturer (associate professor) in product design at the University of Dundee in Scotland where I am part of a research group exploring social uses of digital technology. My values are in social innovation and I believe that we need to work with people who are often ignored because of their social or economic backgrounds. I live by the sea and can often be found in the café of Anstruther’s National Museum of Fisheries – a great place to visit and talk to me about making the web physical! James Tilly Matthews.
