Applications at this level are very numerous. Most of the applications for the representation of metadata can be handled by RDF at this level. Examples include card index information (the Dublin Core), Privacy information (P3P), associations of style sheets with documents, intellectual property rights labeling and PICS labels. We are talking about the representation of data here, which is typically simple: not languages for expressing queries or inference rules. Semantic Web roadmap http://www.w3.org/DesignIssues/Semantic

It is critical that machines gain a new level of understanding. Instead of statistically computing how well a search term matches a document, a machine must literally be able to understand. Therefore, knowledge bases are needed to look things up. The Web of Data: Creating Machine-Accessible Information http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/web_of_data_machine_accessible_information.php

Linked Data is Blooming: Why You Should Care http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/linked_data_is_blooming_why_you_should_care.php Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the Web, gave a must-view talk at the TED Conference earlier this year, evangelizing Linked Data. He said that Linked Data was a sea change akin to the invention of the WWW itself. We've gone from a Web of documents, via the WWW, to a Web of data. Berners-Lee is now on a crusade for everyone from government departments, to individuals, to open up their data and put it on the Web - so that others can link to it and use it. In this post we give a high-level overview of Linked Data.

In a nutshell here are some of the new or noticeable trends that we're seeing on the 2009 Web: Open data In 2009 we're seeing more products based on open, structured data e.g. Wolfram Alpha . We're seeing more real-time apps e.g. Twitter , OneRiot . Web 3.0 or Not, There's Something Different About 2009 http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/something_new_in_2009.php

Web of Data, Not Documents Tim Berners-Lee said in February this year that we're now in a Web of Data , rather than a Web of Documents. The organization that Berners-Lee heads, the W3C, has heavily promoted two key initiatives that are helping to build this Web of Data: the Semantic Web and more recently Linked Data . The first major Web trend we're looking at is Structured Data . http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/top_5_web_trends_of_2009_structured_data.php Top 5 Web Trends of 2009: Structured Data

What is the Semantic Web? The Semantic Web is a Web that includes documents, or portions of documents, describing explicit relationships between things and containing semantic information intended for automated processing by our machines. It operates on the principle of shared data. When you define what a particular type of data is, you can link it to other bits of data and say "that's the same", or some other relation. http://swag.webns.net/whatIsSW
