Sling shot. Oldies-goldies. This tensegrity series engaged me with its deviation from the strict principles of its kin. The classic, widely accepted definition of tensegrities describes them as structures where discontinuous compressive members float within a continuous tensile web. Here the structural integrity is maintained within a system where both compression and tension elements are islanded. "slingshot" study, 3x2 That’s why I called it dissegrity, which emphasises on the uniqueness of its composition and differentiates it among the pattern integrities. The striking feature is that the tendons which keep it together are far fewer than those that would normally be deployed for structural stability of the assembly.

This creates an awkward tendency of the structure to deflect, which can easily be remedied by adding cables, but is engaging for sculptural purposes. The next steps would be in several directions: scale up by multiplying the members into a higher order of a generative polyhedron. Tensegrity Wiki Blogspot. Something fishy is going on in tensegrity structures--fishy as in fish tanks, or to be more precise, underwater fish cages. Robert E. Skelton and SINTEF are joining forces to further the development of this approach to underwater confinement. SINTEF runs the Ocean Space Center, image at right. All this fishiness started with Wroldsen's patent for a "Marine Structure For A Fish Cage For Aquaculture With A Net Spanned By A Tensegrity Structure". The present invention relates to design concepts for flexible marine aquaculture structures. The invention includes a series of actuated ring structures, based on octahedral cells like those Passera & Pedretti deployed for the Blur Building, Swiss Expo, 2001, and local energy production by means of motion actuated generators.

The whole idea of tensegrity cages is in the news again, as Skelton is advising Trondheim scientists on tensegrity structures, as part of NTNU and SINTEF’s marine research groups. All tensegrity constructions are chiral. They can be either left-handed or right-handed, (clockwise or counter-clockwise) depending on the rotational pattern of the vertices of the struts. In 1-fold symmetry, we postulate that both the left-handed and right-handed 6-Pentagonal Tensegrity Spheres occupy, or share, the same space. As expansion occurs, separation occurs, and the symmetry shifts from 1-fold to 2-fold: each 6-pentagonal tensegrity sphere becomes a left-handed and right-handed 6-Decagonal Tensegrity Sphere. In a subsequent contraction, the left and right 6-Decagonal Tensegrity Spheres (icosidodecahedra) become left and right tensegrity rhombic triacontahedra.

It follows from our premises that the source of all motion (energy) comes not from the wave, but its predecessor: the matrix of 6-pentagonal tensegrity spheres. In 1-fold symmetry there is a 360o axial rotation for each of the 30 struts. SUMMATION 1-fold symmetry is the beginning and end of holistic geometry. Tensegrity ebook download in PDF format. Dancing Tensegrity. Andy Doro Introduction to Physical Computing Carlyn Maw, ITP, Fall 2006 Inspirations My initial interest was in doing a project involving some invisible part of the electro-magnetic spectrum, to allow people to "see" or hear "Hertzian space.

" These investigations were compiled in magnetophonics. I was able to detect changing magnetic fields using a simple pickup from Radioshack which produced sound. But I wanted to create a visual response as well. My original plan involved solenoids in a spheroid shape, such as a dodecahedron. Unfortunately, I ordered the wrong sort of solenoids. I began to despair until someone suggested I use vibrational motors. I ordered some very inexpensive vibrational motors online ($0.50 each). How Does It Work? The tensegrity structure is one of the simplest three-dimensional objects. The computer peforms fast fourier transform on incoming sound from line-in. The computer runs Max/MSP in order to detect beats. Materials electronics Construction Code Max/MSP patch. Complex Living Tensegrities. Chris Lucas "The Greek geometers could not therefore define the planar extensibility that lay outside and beyond the line of known content.

Since the surface outside of the line went to infinity, you could not include it in your computation. The Greeks' concept of the geometrical, bound-area of their triangle - or their circle - lay demonstrably on only one bound-area side of the line. As a consequence of such fundamental schooling, world society became historically biased about everything. Continually facing survival strategy choices, society assumed that it must always choose between two or more political or religious 'sides'. Thus developed the seeming nobility of loyalties.

The building conceived as a dynamic system within which there is a constant, computer-mediated interaction between users, environment and building. Kas Oosterhuis (Oosterhuis Associates) and Lars Spuybroek (of the Rotterdam office NOX) have been going on about it for years. The commission to design the Water Pavilion, a building to house an exhibition about water on the former construction island Neeltje Jans, finally provided them with an opportunity to put these ideas into practice in a permanent structure.

It took a good deal of persuasion on their part to convince the clients (the Department of Roads and Waterways and the Ministry of Transport and Public Works) that building and exhibition should be a single volume, an environment dedicated to the experience of water.
