College, Why? Since I was 13 years old, I knew UC Santa Barbara was the college for me. My family and I made a trip over to Santa Barbara for the weekend, where we met up with a family friend who was currently attending UCSB for her undergrad. As we walked through the beautiful campus, serene coastline on my right and beautiful mountains on my left, I was in awe. The fact that this amazing stretch of beach could also provide one of the best educations in the country made me wonder why I had even considered going anywhere else.
Since our launch in April 2007 50M+ lessons have been delivered, learners have spent 2M+ hours studying, and praise has been attracted from some remarkable sources:
Saylor.org is a free and open collection of college level courses . There are no registrations or fees required to take our courses, and you will earn a certificate upon completion of each course. Because we are not accredited, you will not earn a college degree or diploma; however, our team of experienced college professors has designed each course so you will be able to achieve the same learning objectives as students enrolled in traditional colleges. For more Open CourseWare universities, see current members, including 22 U.S. universities and many from around the world. The search engine for finding courses is mediocre. “Provides universal access to tuition-free online post-secondary education to qualified students in order that students may be able to overcome any geographic or financial limitations and access higher learning.”
FastCompany highlights Anka Mulder Anka Mulder is the General Secretary of the Technological University of Delft (Netherlands), which houses one of the premiere OpenCourseWare projects, including full masters degrees’ worth of materials in nanotechnology, water resource management and other subjects. Now serving her second term as President of the Board of Directors of the OpenCourseWare Consortium, she is a driving force in moving the OCW movement toward a learner-centric model. Fast Company has just featured her as one of the 100 most creative people in business – well, the business of higher education in this case. This site provides sample course content and tutorials for Computer Science (CS) students and educators on current computing technologies and paradigms. All the courses on Google Code University are under the Creative Commons license, which makes it easy for educators to use for their own classes.
