PWR New Media | Powerlines | Winter 2010

As news creation and consumption continues to shift on-line, main-stream media outlets have also migrated to the web and downsized. This means that journalists and bloggers have little time and support but aggressive publication demands, particularly the demand to create on-line content. In addition, there are now millions of new voices as the blogosphere expands and social platforms enable new means of communicating. http://www.pwrnewmedia.com/2010/powerlines_winter/index.html

Should You Put Your Social Media Information On Your Resume? | G

The graduation parties are over, you’ve moved out of your dorm, and reality is beginning to set in. The Real World. Not the MTV reality TV show, but the actual real world. It’s natural to feel a little anxiety (or a lot!), but as with anything worth doing, a solid plan is required. http://www.gradversity.com/should-you-put-your-social-media-information-on-your-resume/
Fraser Seitel, author of my favorite acadamia-intended PR textbook, answers the question that many others, especially those working in the media, are wondering: Why Do PR professionals have a hard time writing? Mark Ragan from Ragan Communications also points out the common practice of bad writing among PR folks in his article, “Why is PR writing so atrocious?” But why are so many PR professionals bad writers? Why don’t they take the time to hone their writing skills? http://www.brazencareerist.com/2010/02/03/can-pr-tell-the-difference-between-write-and-wrong

[Guest Post] 5 Tips for Planning Your First Press Conference | B

By: Samantha McCain For the last five months, I have been interning with a local community foundation. It has been, by far, the most rewarding and challenging public relations work I have done to date. Recently, our Executive Director tasked me with planning a press conference for one of our funds. http://www.brazencareerist.com/2010/02/10/5-tips-for-planning-your-first-press-conference

More and more, MBA curriculums are being distinguished as training and networking grounds for upcoming entrepreneurs. Being sharp enough to face the challenges of running a company can be merciless, particularly in this high tech, fast paced territory.

As a professional communicator, I’m always intrigued by how many people in the business of communicating can still get tripped up by crossed wires. Sometimes that can lead to the age-old cynical curse that goes, “No good deed goes unpunished.” But sometimes, like yesterday, there’s a learning experience to be had. The case in point is the Detroit chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and its hosting of the 2010 Michigan PRSA conference, PRevolution , in Novi.

That’s Right I Tweet… And You Should Too!

Nearly every time I tell my friends, family, and even coworkers that I’m on Twitter the SAME thing happens: They look at me like I just told them that I secretly play Dungeons and Dragons in my basement. Or Farmville. Or maybe that I run a secret Star Trek book club on the weekends.

Now I am living my post-grad dream: working in a tall building doing PR for an awesome company with a really cool client list. I still pinch myself every once in a while just to make sure I’m not asleep. But I confess: I am absolutely intimidated by the vast NY sea (pun intended). I have a slight idea of what I’m doing, but most of the time I’m completely lost and have to ask for directions — both as an intern and as sidewalk traffic. http://theprepguide.wordpress.com/2010/05/28/little-fish-in-the-big-apple/

WordPress.com Adds Its Own "Like" and Reblogging Features

WordPress.com’s millions of blogs are getting social with two new features: quick reblogging and the ability to “like” posts. The newly launched features are now accessible via a like menu item in the admin bar at the top of the page, although you have to be logged into a WordPress account to use them. The new like button is very simple — once you click it, it adds to a counter that shows the author how many people liked his or her post. Once you like something, the top menu changes to “You like this.”
