General DescriptionThe design of this large diaphragm condenser microphone is based on experience gained in long-term and worldwide operation of the previous models C 12A, C 12B, C 414 comb and C 414 EB-P. Modern technology and reliable components now enable us to offer additional features in the same space.

Read the C 414 story here. Story of the AKG C414. The Tech's Files -- Micro-lution - Inside the AKG C414. Feb 1, 2007 12:00 PM, By Eddie Ciletti My focus this month is on the AKG C-414, a venerable studio condenser mic that has about as many permutations as the Universal Audio 1176. At first glance, this might appear to be a history of the 414 when it's really about understanding the technology, the mic's inner workings and trying to keep it working. The modern C-414 hails from the original C-12, shown; the C-12A that followed it used a Nuvistor tube and debuted the familiar boxy body shape associated with the later 414 Series.

This story started with a collection of broken mics waiting for a quiet, undistracted moment. The sad thing about many of these specimens was their physical condition — AKG 414s with their head assemblies and grilles snapped off, or dented Neumann U87s with broken switches, and filthy and punctured capsules. CHARGE IT UPCondenser mics start with a polarized capsule, meaning that a charge is put on the capsule that will vary with changes in sound pressure. MixLine. The AKG C 12 and the Telefunken ELA M 250, M 251. The AKG C 12 is a studio condenser microphone of the highest professional quality. It has been specially designed for use in sound recording and broadcasting studios, and is the choice of many studios both at home and abroad.Nine different directional characteristics can be selected by means of a remote control unit without any change in frequency response or sensitivity. In addition to three basic characteristics, omni-directional, cardioid and bi-directional, six intermediate patterns (including hypercardioids) are available.

The S 12 control unit is connected to the N 12 power supply unit by the RL 12 remote control cable, and the power supply unit to the microphone by the MK 12 mic cable. Download a description of the original C 12(German and English) The 12 Upgrade. Our Premium Edition featuring the CT12 Capsule In the beginning... The original AKG ck12 capsule The original AKG c12 used a magic capsule that we are told needs spells and incantations to reproduce. We don't have that magic but... ... we are told Tim Campbell knows all the magic! Tim Campbell's CT12 capsule "Hello Brian, My name is ****** and I am friends with ******* ******-*******. I would like to order a C12+ like he has had done by you.

Please let me know how to proceed Thank you in advance ******" Actual Customer request After a year of wondering we finally got around to trying out a CT12 capsule from Tim Campbell. The original c12 capsule was used in such legendary microphones as the c12, the c24, ELA m251 and also in the early versions of the AKG 414 solid state microphones. Now make no mistake; we get VERY good results using the RK12 or the CEK12 capsule in our Basic and Standard model microphones. This capsule is not for the casual recordist. But the CT12 capsule is hand made. CANADIAN AUDIO DISTRIBUTORS - APEX 460 MODIFICATION - How to. The Apex 460 / C12 Mod | recording hacks. One of the biggest trends in the pro audio world in the last 10 years, apart from the resurgence of the ribbon microphone, has been the modification of lower-end gear to yield high-end results.

In many cases, a simple tube or transformer swap can immediately make a noticeable difference in the sound. In some cases, additional circuit changes can transform a good piece of equipment into great equipment that might rival the performance of gear many times its price. Perhaps nowhere is this more prevalent these days than with microphones. Not only are there a ton of sites that offer DIY solutions for mic mods, but there are several companies and boutique “mic modders” who offer these services for a reasonable price. Reasonable, that is, when you consider the price of the mics that these modified specimens are said to rival.

The mic’s large-diaphragm capsule is a 32mm Chinese K67 copy, advertised as having 5-micron membranes although in reality this specification varies without notice. The mic supports 9 polar patterns, switchable from the power supply. MIXAt $229, the Apex 460 is a phenomenal buy. This is one of many AKG C12 lookalikes, and is possibly one of the best-known and most widely available; as a result, much work has been done by hobbyists to mod this mic, such as replacing the capsule and transformer and some components on the circuit board.

Telefunken Ela M 251 Multi-Pattern Tube Condenser Microphone Designed and manufactured by AKG at the request of Telefunken, the Ela M 251 was a 3-pattern tube mic built around AKG’s famed CK12 capsule. Telefunken had never manufactured microphones, but instead served as the distributor — and brand name — for mics made by Neumann and AKG. Notably, the early U 47 microphone was branded by Telefunken, despite having been designed and manufactured by Neumann. When Neumann began distributing its products under its own name, Telefunken was reportedly left without a large-diaphragm condenser in its product line, and commissioned AKG to develop a replacement.

Two different glass tubes were used in the Ela M 251 microphone: Ela M 250/251 - This mic used a hard-wired Telefunken AC701k tube.Ela M 250E/251E - The “Export” version of the 250/251 used a socketed 6072 tube, which at the time was more readily available outside of Europe than was Telefunken’s AC701k. How were the C12 and ElaM 251 different? JJ audio mods. The MXL V67g Mod The V67 is a great platform to mod because the front end of this mic is a copy of the Neumann U87. I conduted extensive tests on this microphone and found some very nice mods for this mic that improve the sound of this microphone.

I finally decided that I wanted to see if I could get the sound of this mic close to the sound of the Neumann U87 microphone. I removed the 2SA1015 circuit and the 2SK170bl and replaced the 2SK170bl with a higher gain Fet that is connonly used in a modded U87 microphone. This Fet has about 7 to 8 db more gain and works well with the MXL V67 circuit. The circuit is then modded to act like the U87. The stock capsule is very similar to the K87 capsule and responds the same way to the filtering that is in the U87 circuit. The Vienna / Hamburg conversion The Vienna / Hamburg mod takes already good mics to the next level.

I install a dual membrane capsule to get the two polar patterns. Options for the conversions: All prices for options are installed. Joly Mod SPB1. Do you find your B1 too bright or harsh? The Neumann K67 capsule was designed with a built-in high frequency response peak.

Michael Joly modified SP B1With MJE-K47 capsule, single layer headbasket and Premium Electronics It may be an oversight - or a cost-saving tactic, but many inexpensive mics do not have the HF de-emphasis circuitry required for ideal K67-type capsule sound. Advanced Audio Microphones CM-12 Multi-Pattern Tube Condenser Microphone The CM-12 is a multipattern tube mic designed to reproduce the look and sound of the AKG C-12 / Elam 251 microphones. The capsule is a 27mm edge-fed dual-diaphragm design, claimed to be within 2dB of the response curve of the original C12 capsule. The basic microphone is built in China, then upgraded by Advanced Audio: the Chinese tube is swapped for a true 6072a, and the transformer is upgraded to a Cinemag CM-2480 (widely used as an HST-11A/Apex 460 mod).

AA’s model CM-12SE trades the stock capsule from the CM-12 for a Peluso CEK-12 34mm (AKG C12-style) edge-fed dual-diaphragm capsule (utilizing 6mm German Mylar for the diaphragms). The SE sells for $849. A switch on the power supply allows selection of 9 polar patterns. The Advanced Audio Microphones CM-12 is also known as: CM12, CM-12SE, CM12SE. The mic was released in 2007.
