Surf's up: The Mini Clubman Airstream trailer design concept Image Gallery (11 images) April 24, 2009 A collaboration between MINI, Airstream trailers and Danish furniture designers Republic of Fritz Hansen has resulted in this hip, beach-ready design study made up of a modified MINI Cooper S Clubman and a customized 6.8m long Airstream trailer.

While largely retaining the familiar metallic look of the iconic Airstream trailer on the exterior, the inside of the trailer is kitted-out with wood panel flooring, ergonomic Egg chairs and, in keeping with the sun-loving vibe, neoprene lining and floral prints add to the interior trimming while a bisected surfboard provides the shelf space. But the killer app is an electrically operated fold-out side panel that incorporates an open air day bed where you can kick-back while waiting for the tide to turn. Coming off the back of the well-received launch of its new Actros heavyweight tractor unit, Mercedes brought along a trailer concept design that aims to match and extend the significant commercial and environmental advantages of that unit. It looks cool, too. View all There's no getting around the fact that trucks are big square boxes that take a lot of energy to plow through the air. The trailer is still a concept at this stage, since the extension at the rear will require a change in legislation. Nissan unveils BaseCamp Airstream Trailer. These teardrop trailers are not only lightweight, but also offer campers extra cargo space, a flexible load-carrying platform, a meal preparation area and cooking station, and a standard mattress.

Teardrops were most popular during the 30s through to the 50s, but slowly faded out of fashion as campers grew larger and RVs became super-sized. With current fuel prices, however, the teardrop trailer is starting to make more sense for the environmentally-conscious camper. It comes fully self-contained and includes a rooftop tent, a sink with running hot and cold water, cabin heater, outdoor shower, free standing awning, cabin air conditioning, solar panels, portable toilet and generator.
