There is growing interest in the use of shipping containers as the basis for habitable structures. These "icons of globalization" are relatively inexpensive, structurally sound and in abundant supply. Although, in raw form, containers are dark windowless boxes (which might place them at odds with some of the tenets of modernist design...) they can be highly customizable modular elements of a larger structure. Old Lady – Casa rústica basada en contenedores marítimos [Adam Kalkin]
La construcción de viviendas con contenedores de transportes “ container architecture ”, es una tendencia que está teniendo mucho auge en todo el mundo, ya que son baratos, móviles y altamente reciclables. <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8035" style="margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;" title="Old Lady – Casa rústica basada en contenedores marítimos [Adam Kalkin]" src="http://www.concienciaeco.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/adam-kalkin-old-lady-house-2.jpg" alt="adam kalkin old lady house 2 Old Lady – Casa rústica basada en contenedores marítimos [Adam Kalkin]" width="586" height="400" /> Adam Kalkin , un arquitecto vanguardista que parece haberse especializado en el reciclaje de contenedores, nos revela su nueva creación, “ Old Lady ”. En esta ocasión ha creado una magnifica y soleada casa rústica en Califon, New Jersey, formada por tres contenedores de ancho por dos de alto, basada en la el proyecto Quik House .Casa hecha con CONTENEDORES de carga
Esta casa se está construyendo (Kansas City, Mo) utilizando contenedores (12.5×2.5m), dispuestos a partir de una base de muros de hormigón que forman el sótano, van creando los diferentes espacios de la vivienda. Con este sistema se reducen muchos trabajos de obra, casi la totalidad de los forjados y cubiertas, y otros elementos estructurales. BNIM Architects asesora la contrucción de esta casa de contenedores con lo último en materiales y tecnología verde: calor geotérmico , aislamiento de espuma de soja , y suelos de bambú . Eso sí, los contenedores han viajado desde China, pero no sabemos si con más materiales o muebles dentro. Tendrá 180m 2 una vez terminada, que será dentro de cinco meses. Las ventanas y puertas ya están marcadas en la chapa de cada contenedor, para que sean recortadas y en su lugar se coloquen las carpinterías.

Hace un tiempo que en Santiago de Chile ya se están viendo construcciones hechas de Containers. De hecho, hace un par de años, el montaje de la Bienal de Arquitectura de Santiago fue hecho de esa forma. Además MVRDV , y Shigeru Ban ya habían incursionado en proyectos basados integramente en containers. Pero spillman.echsle architeckten fueron más lejos y para la marca de los taquilleros bolsos FREITAG hechos con pvc reciclado, hicieron de su edificio principal una torre de containers. Muy efectivo, efectista y tremendamente marketero, cumple claramente los objetivos de la marca.
This is one of those designs that most of us never see – the incredible cantilevered portion of the wood-facade structure by Jackson-Clements-Burrows juts out over the private back yard, while the front of the house is relatively nondescript. Who gets the best seat in the house? The kids’ rooms are in the thrust portion of this sustainable hovering residential addition.

Environmentally low-impact though this house by Berg Design may be it is certainly a visually high-impact structure, filled with dynamic modern lines and contrasting contemporary materials that make quite a statement against its naturalistic surroundings. Though you might not guess it at first glance, this house design was inspired by regional vernacular agricultural architecture – a modern reinterpretation of a local building typology, only much more contemporary and eco-friendly in its construction. This beautiful small, inexpensive and modern home design is anything but what it seems. From a distance this curiously simple-looking green house almost disappears into the natural landscape and up close it looks like a broken old greenhouse with trees slowly pushing up through its remains. Lightweight modern materials surround the exterior, breaking down visual barriers between indoors and out, while warm woods and canvasses are spread through the interior to make it comfortable, cozy and livable.
